I've walked through the Basic steps for removing spyware, trojans and viruses, and this has helped significantly to remove many problems from this machine. However, a few issues persist despite several cleanings using Ad-Aware, Spybot, and others.

The issues I saw in the beginning included Aurora, PeopleOnPeople, Apropos, and others. I am still seeing intermitent appearances of Tango, ABetterInternet, and hooowah.com, as well as TrojanDownloader and Keylogger.Trojan.

    Please help!

    [IMG] Download HijackThis 1.99.1

[IMG] Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

[IMG] Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file as your backups will not be safely stored.

[IMG]Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

[IMG]Run HijackThis and save your log file.

[IMG] Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post as it will be removed).

You have one of the newer infections that requires many steps and is time consuming. However, it is possible to remove it so lets begin.

First, look in Add or Remove Programs for the following and Uninstall them if found:

    WeatherBug

    Download the following tools:

    Generic Detection Tool - NT/2000/XP

    Pocket KillBox

Now, I will need 3 logs. You will have to make 2 post but its ok.

First, unzip the Generic Detection Tool to a safe folder of your choice and run "find.bat" - Allow it as much time as it needs to run. You may get an error message of "File Not Found," but just let it go.

The tool should generate a long text file. Attach this log as an attachment to your post.

1 - Please EXTRACT all files from Qoologic Tool to its own folder - C:\Program Files\QoologicFinder . Then, DoubleClick Find-Qoologic.bat to run the tool. It should produce a log - Please attach that with your next post!

2 - Please EXTRACT all the files form RKFiles Tool to its own folder named C:\Program Files\RKTOOL. Then, Please boot to SAFE MODE and DoubleClick rkfiles.bat to run the tool. Let it run and then, when it finishes, look for a log at C:\Log.txt and please attach that log.

Now come back here and post all 3 logs as attachments.

Uninstalled Weatherbug and something called the Weatherbug toolbar, but Weatherbug still launches when the computer boots. It is no longer listed in Add/Remove programs, so I'm not sure how to uninstall it completely.

Attached are the first two log files. I got an MS-DOS error with both when I ran them. Something about 16 bit and it couldn't run. I clicked Ignore anyway and they seemed to run fine. Will attach third file next.

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fix.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.)
Double-click on the fix.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to merge, click YES!

    • If you get an error message about Pending Operations, just reboot your computer manually.

After you complete ALL of the above, reboot and attach a fresh HJT log.

Ran the steps, no noticeable issues. Booting up was faster, less popups noticed this time. I STILL have WeatherBug starting up everytime, however. I uninstalled it and keep checking Add/Remove Programs and it isn't in that list. Is this an issue.

    HJT log file is attached.

    Thanks!

Please be patient, I know this still comes up but you have more serious problems than this. We will address each issues one at a time.

Please look in Add or Remove Programs for the following and Uninstall them if found:

    AutoUpdate

Please boot into Safe Mode with the Viewing of Hidden Files & Folders Enabled

Now scan with HijackThis and Check the Boxes for the following:

Make sure All Browser Windows are Closed when you Click FIX.

    C:\WINDOWS\system\nwlk.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe

logcjt32.exe <-- Search for this file and delete when found, most likely will be in C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINDOWS\System32.

    NEXT:
Run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files.

Run full scans with Ad-Aware SE & Spybot S&D and have both programs fix what they find.
Note: Remember to get all updates before doing the scans.

Then, as an added precaution, Go to Start > Run and type: cleanmgr and then click OK. Make sure the boxes for these are checked:
    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    And Click OK.

    Reboot to Normal Windows

Now I need the 4 logs, 3 from post #4 along with a fresh HJT log. It will take 2 post but I need all 4 fresh logs.

    Ran all the steps.

A few of the items were not listed as you described in HJT and subsequent steps, but I expect that is normal.

Also, when I booted into Normal mode the last time, PestPatrol warned me of "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntvdm.exe". Just to give you a good description of what is going on. No popups this time around, and it booted with good speed.

Attached are the HJT and rkfiles logs. The rkfiles log I ran in Safe Mode, before I rebooted into Normal Mode this last time.

Before you start this fix you MUST disable any and all antivirus and antispyware programs because its blocking what we try to fix. Mainly get rid of the AOL crap because its worthless and causes more problems.

Now please print out these instructions so that you can operate with All Browser Windows CLOSED.

Please make sure System Restore is OFF and the Viewing of Hidden Files & Folders is Enabled as per the tutorial.

Now, look in Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) for the following running processes and, if you see any of them, try to END them:

    onpnar.exe

Now scan with HijackThis and Check the Boxes for the following:

Make sure All Browser Windows are Closed when you Click FIX.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=

    C:\Program Files\AWS

    NEXT:
Run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files.

    Locate PocketKillbox
(Procede with this step even if they do not show in blue)

Now, Copy and Paste C:\WINDOWS\system32\onpnar.exe into the box – If it exists, it will show up in Blue. Check the option to Delete on Reboot and Click the Red X and Yes to the confirmation message. A message will ask if you want to reboot now – Click NO.

Now, Copy and Paste C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\tara.exe into the box – If it exists, it will show up in Blue. Check the option to Delete on Reboot and Click the Red X and Yes to the confirmation message. A message will ask if you want to reboot now – Click NO.

Now, Copy and Paste C:\WINDOWS\logcjt32.exe into the box – If it exists, it will show up in Blue. Check the option to Delete on Reboot and Click the Red X and Yes to the confirmation message. A message will ask if you want to reboot now – Click NO.

This new infection can sometimes come back after a few reboots and things so thats why Im requesting this.

Rebooted a few times, opened a browser and went to a few of my usual sites. No real popups beyond the normal stuff (bluesnews.com).

Excellent! Thank you so much. It would seem that the issues have cleared up at long last!

I appreciate all the help. You've been great, and extremely patient.

As a side note, how do I learn more about this stuff so that I can do more of this stuff on my own? I work in IT, and feel like I should know more about this, and about the specific things to look for. Are there resources you can point me towards?

    Thanks!
