PHP won't work on FreeBSD/apache

Hi All,

This is my first post here...I hope this is the right place for it.

Here is the HW:
An old Compaq 266 - a prototype I brought home 8 years ago
32 mb memory
8 gb Quantum BigFoot HDD
Intel 10/100 PCI NIC
An old S3 PCI video card

There does not appear to be any HW problems.

I have installed FreeBSD 4.9 - no problem with the install. I have also installed PostgreSQL and Apache with the Front Page extensions via the ports collection. Again, no problem with the install. The apache test page comes up fine.

Then, I installed PHP4 through the ports collection as well. The installation seemed fine. The appropriate entries were made in httpd.conf:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

I created a test page called test.php:

<HEAD>
<TITLE>Test PHP Script</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<H1>This is a PHP test page</H1>
<?php
phpinfo();
print ("Hello world");
?>
</BODY>
</HTML>

The problem is that the page loads, but the PHP code doesn't run. The TITLE and the H1 text are there. I have to believe that something is configured right or else the page wouldn't even load (with a .php extension). I've been working on this for days and nobody has been able to figure it out. I have deinstalled and re-installed apache and PHP, but no luck.

I hope I gave enough information. If you need more, just ask. This is driving me nuts!!
