Playing DVDs on old TV

My TV is old and does not have RCA sockets on the back. I play DVDs by plugging the DVD player into my videotape player while it is on "line in". From there it goes into the TV via the AV socket.
This works for only a few DVDs, whilst others (presumably with copy protection) play ( in black and white) for 30 seconds, followed by a blue screen.
Is there any way (short of buying a new TV) that anyone knows how to play DVDs using the equipment I have?
