MBytes found 6 instances of PUP.Optional.RegCleanPro. I told MB to remove. The next scan I ran of MB came out clean. I am including both logs.

Computer is slow. Hitman Pro, I believe found two instances of Ask.toolbar. We installed 2 gigs of ram a while back. Initially made some improvement but now it boots slow again and bogs down in the browser.

Not sure if we can add more ram or if it will make any difference.

    Thanks for your help

    Hello, trisha

Please re-scan with Hitman Pro and have it delete everything under the heading of
    • Potential Unwanted Programs

Reboot the machine and run a new scan with Hitman Pro. Now attach the new log to your next reply.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool. (Vista & Win7 users should right-click and "Run As Administrator")
    • Click on the Scan button.
    • After the scan has finished..
    • Click on the Clean button.
    • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
    • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
    • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
    • A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.
    • Attach this log to your next reply.

[IMG] Now download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach the JRT.txt to your next message.

How is you pc running now?

    Hi dr.moriarty,

I will follow your directions when I get back to that computer, probably a few days from now. I have a question about the malware that was detected. Do any of the items found have potential for stealing passwords and the like? Should I change passwords after the cleaning is complete? Should that change be done from a different computer?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello, Trisha

Delaying the cleanup of such malware could cause more serious problems to appear. Changing passwords from a known-to-be clean pc is always a good practice.

I followed the directions you posted for clean up. New logs attached. In answer to your question, the computer seems to be running faster now.

Thanks. That is good news! I will be ready to do the final steps when I get back to that computer again, probably later next week.

I am wondering why McAffee Suite didn't prevent Ask from being installed on the computer. Something I did notice was I had to uninstall and reinstall the av software to shut it down when I was trying to install MGTools. When I reinstalled the av then all of the navigation windows reappeared. I wonder if one of these bugs disabled the av.

    Suppose anything is possible. :confused

Thanks for all of your help dr. I will let you know when I am ready to do the final steps.

    You're very welcome, Trisha.

Lots of adware toolbars, rogue search engines, and junkware come bundled with software downloads, and users fail to thoroughly read the EUL's to option out of such installs.

Let me know when you are ready to finish up. ;)
