Please help me lick the last of this malware!

My comp: Windows XP, AMD 2200+ with half a gig of ram.
My stupidity: Ran an .exe that looked awefully suspicious. The fully up-to-date McAffe v-shield viruscaner said it was clean, so if should have been safe right?
What I did: Bought Spyware Dr. after some research, uninstalled Pestpatrol. After scan I was able to use comp without horrible slowdown (now it's on an off). I had the smitfraud malware (with the annoying taskbar pop-ups ect) but the 14 day trial of spysweeper took care of that for me.
Current symptoms: Funny looking processes in task manager. Vshield will pop up with unremovable trojans ect. Sometimes the vshield will pop-up over and over again with the same msg (most annoying). Moderate slowdown. (sample msgs: clc.exe, hp102.tmp, puper.dll, Generic Downloader.ab, bgates.exe)
Please Help: I've gone through all the steps in the intro sticky. My scan logs are attached. Is whatever that's left dangerous? If so, could you please point me in the right direction to get rid of it? Thank you so much :) :) :)

No it did not take care of it. You are still infected with one of the many forms of Smitfraud. You need to run the below procedure and then attach the smitfiles.txt log.

    SpywareQuake & SpyFalcon Removal Procedure

You have a bunch of different problems. In fact you should have noticed Spy Sweeper mentioning winlogonhook. And if you run it again and again, you will still see it.

Now run the below procedure and attach the runkeys.txt log.
Now run the below procedure and attach the newfiles.txt log.

Thanks for the help Chaslang :) . Those tools of yours are very nice. I followed the protocols and the logs should be attached. I should mention that I tried fixing the problems myself, which probably wasn't a great idea. I "fixed/deleted" the following with HJT.

    2 - BHO: Nothing - {5f4c3d09-b3b9-4f88-aa82-31332fee1c08} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp102.tmp (file missing)
    2 - BHO: (no name) - {B9B2F7D3-A9ED-D9D7-2387-03483A4CD0C8} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {2B602982-1744-3F9F-67D7-1EDC6E0A1BBE} - http://85.255.113.214/1/gdnUS2339.exe
    O16 - DPF: {3CBDB86A-C246-2AB3-E0E2-29044C00F7AA} - http://85.255.113.214/1/gdnUS2339.exe
    O18 - Protocol hijack: mhtml -

Sorry about that. Also, at first I couldn't find the smitfiles.txt file, so I ran the process again in normal boot mode. If you need me to run it again in safe mode (or to do anything else for that matter), just let me know. Thanks again, for all your help!! :) :)

That was not a good idea. You overwrote the original file so I cannot tell what it removed. The second log just indicates nothing found.

You should have uninstalled Viewpoint Manager in step 0 of the READ ME. Uninstall it now.

You have other malware problems hiding on your PC. You need to follow the directions in step 7 of the READ ME exactly as written. MAKE SURE you stop using MSconfig to control startups. This is covered when you get to step 7. You must choose Normal Startup and then attach a new HJT log.

The also attach a new runkeys.txt log.

I know that Viewpoint Manager was at one time in the Add/Remove Programs box, but now it's no where to be found. I also looked through Program Files and did a search for "Viewpoint" but couldn't find anything. I've set the comp back to normal boot mode (sorry those programs are so annoying) and the ordered logs should be attached.

Thanks again, for your continued assitance.

Are you getting a C:\windows\system32 folder opening when you startup your PC?

Which programs are your referring to that are so annoying? My concern is with malware but you have a pile of other unnecessary stuff that perhaps you do not want.

Do you use or need the below stuff:

    "GameSpot"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Kontiki\\bin\\kontiki.exe\" -s GameSpot -q"
    "cnet"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Kontiki\\bin\\kontiki.exe\" -s cnet -q"

    "CTStartup"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Creative\\Splash Screen\\CTEaxSpl.EXE\" /play"

I also see Spyware Doctor, Spy Sweeper, and Pest Patrol. Are they free versions or paid versions? If free, uninstall them.

You show signs of having both McAfee and Norton Antivirus applications installed. Are they both installed and which do you use? Uninstall one of them.

No, the system 32 folder does not come up at start-up. The annoying program is/was McAffe "Network Associates" VirusScan Enterprise 7.0. It kept pop-ing up with warnings about viruses/trojans that it couldn't remove.

The viruscaner hasn't come up at all today. I removed system32/wineil32.dll, which was the last thing that kept popping up. I used killbox as per the instruction you gave another forum user. Spyware docter also did a full system scan and removed 7 items.

Do you use or need the below stuff:

    "GameSpot"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Kontiki\\bin\\kontiki.exe\" -s GameSpot -q"
    "cnet"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Kontiki\\bin\\kontiki.exe\" -s cnet -q"

    "CTStartup"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Creative\\Splash Screen\\CTEaxSpl.EXE\" /play"

No, I don't think I need those. It's been awhile since I used kontiki. Should I just delete them?

I also see Spyware Doctor, Spy Sweeper, and Pest Patrol. Are they free versions or paid versions? If free, uninstall them.

Spyware Doctor is the only paid one. I already uninstalled Pest patrol with the add/remove toolbar, and I just now deleted the folder in Program files. I also uninstalled the trial of spy sweeper.

You show signs of having both McAfee and Norton Antivirus applications installed. Are they both installed and which do you use? Uninstall one of them.

I use the McAfee (free version supplied by my university). I can't find any record of Norton on my PC using google desktop.

My concern is making sure that all the trojans are gone. I use my comp for lots of ebaying, on-line purchasing, checking accounts, trading equities ect and I'm afraid to continue until I know for sure that I'm clean.

Thanks again for the advice. :)

Not a good way to look to see what you have installed or running. Just observe your HJT log and see:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NAV Agent] C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\navapw32.exe

We have a whole load to cleanup and we will include Norton in the list.

Uninstall the Kontiki stuff if you do not need it.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\clc.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = u
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = u

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: wineil32 - wineil32.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete (you may not find all of these but make sure you check):
    C:\Program Files\WildTangent <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\eDonkey2000 <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\RSNet <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Kontiki <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\iun6002.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pmnnlif.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ssqrqrs.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\yayxvvv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\clc.exe

DLHelperEXE.exe <--- Search your PC for this. It is probably in
    c:\Documents and Settings\your_user_account\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Thanks again. I followed your instructions and the HJT file should be attached. I found and deleted all the .ddl's and .exe's you told me to get rid of. I couldn't find DLHelper.exe though. I looked in all the startup folders in all the user profiles and searched with the windows search buddy many times with hidden and sub-folder files included but I didn't find it. The closest thing was DLHelper.exe -342CD6C3.pf in the C:windows/prefetch folder.

So far, the comp is doing great. No ominous unsolicited dosbox programs are running and the virus scanner hasn't popped up yet. The comp is much quieter without regdump.exe pushing the cpu.

I did get a balloon system message that said "Corrupt File in C:~Start Menu for MSASCUI.exe run diskcheck"

Anyway, thanks again SO SO much for all your help. I had started backing up all my files in case I would have to reformat my harddrive. I went through 25 CDRs or so and I only scratched the surface. I hope majorgeeks.com has some sort of profit-sharing deal with you at the very least.

If nothing else is wrong I take it that I can use msconfig to stop some unwanted programs from starting at boot-up? Thanks!

Whoops! Spoke too soon. All the Programs in the Programs part of the Start menu have disappeared. Thankfully I have shortcuts on the desktop to most of the stuff I use. It's still a bit odd. Any ideas?

Actually, the programs in the start menu came back after the disk check. Sorry about all the messages.

Delete that file from Prefetch. You were supposed to delete all files in prefetch in my instructions.

That file is for Windows Defender. Since you have a paid version of Spyware Doctor, you should uninstall Windows Defender now. Also you said you uninstall Pest Patrol and Spy Sweeper but pieces still show in your HJT log. Use HJT to fix the below lines:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PPMemCheck] C:\PROGRA~1\PESTPA~1\PPMemCheck.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PestPatrol Control Center] C:\PROGRA~1\PESTPA~1\PPControl.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

Not recommended for long term use. Even Microsoft only recommends MSconfig for temporary debugging. Exactly what don't you want to load. Decide which of the following categories they fit into:

    - never ever want them to load
    - sometimes want them to load
    - have no idea what it is but I don't miss it when not loaded

  13. jwharton

Yes, I deleted that file, as well as everything else in Prefetch as you instructed. I just now unistalled Windows Defender. I also deleted the remanents of Pestpatrol using HJT. The new HJT log is attached.

I made a list of the bootup commands that I don't want using your three categories. I couldn't copy and paste from the msconfig screen so I had to write the items in by hand. That list should be attached as well.

Okay from your Never want to load list! How many of these are still installed? Uninstall them if you do not ever need them. Are you sure about not needing the all of those? If so, uninstall the ones shown in Add/Remove programs. And then make a new list of which items still remain. Note some individual processes are parts of larger packages and cannot be uninstalled separately but we can fix the small part (for example realsched.exe, CTLtray.exe, NeroCheck, InCD)

For the Don't know what it is list:
P_98116 is a left over from a DirectX upgrade. Just have HJT fix that line.

nwiz.exe is this:http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/nwiz/ and it is not necessary. You can also have HJT fix this line.

For the blank entries, use the below to clean them up:

    MSConfig Cleanup

  15. jwharton

    jwharton Private E-2

Thanks for the help and the link. I removed P_98116 and nwiz with HJT and the blanks with the msconfig cleanup. THe only thing from the "don't ever want it" list that was still in the add/remove programs box was nero so I uninstalled that. However, even after the restart the nero start up items still show up in msconfig/lower right corner of screen. Here's the updated list.

Use HJT to fix the below remaining items from your "Never ever want to load" list!
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickFinder Scheduler] "C:\Program Files\Corel\WordPerfect Office 2002\Programs\QFSCHD100.EXE"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InCD] C:\Program Files\ahead\InCD\InCD.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CloneCDTray] "C:\Program Files\Elaborate Bytes\CloneCD\CloneCDTray.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CloneCDElbyCDFL] "C:\Program Files\Elaborate Bytes\CloneCD\ElbyCheck.exe" /L ElbyCDFL
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TaskTray] C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy\Taskbar\CTLTray.exe

No for other items that you want to use sometimes, check out the below application and let me know how you like using it instead of MSconfig.

Thanks for everything chaslang. I've deleted the above items with HJT. The linked program is also pretty cool. I like how it is incorporated into the control panel and it breaks down the starting programs based on what calls them, and it has a little icon reminding you what it's a part of. Pretty snazzy. Thanks again!

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:
