please help...pc shuts down in seconds of switching it off!!

after swithing on my pc a few lights flash and the fans start but 2 seconds later it just dies!

I am having the same problem on a gateway gt4016

 

Several things can cause this
A shorted MB look for loose screws or other stuff floppin around the inside of your case, skined wires, burn marks...
Dead CPU, cpu with broken pins... even an unseated CPU/HS
Faulty power switch on your case...
also as TimW mentioned failing PSU

 

I put in a new cpu and the pc powers up but know it freeze at verifying dmi pool data

Agreed with the others - you might try disconnecting your hard drive and any other peripherals (both from the motherboard and from the PSU), see if your symptoms change.

@ lashondarm: Please start a new thread in this forum describing your symptoms and listing all pertinent data - the mixing of symptoms and procedures from two machines can quickly lead to mass confusion (especially since you stated that you "put in a new cpu").
