Pop-ups, virus,Trojans

I'm using a Dell 9150 and running Windows XP. Here are my viruses/trojans (with new ones each day):

    trojandownloader.zlob
    trat BHO
    Adware-gen
    Small-IKZ
    Trojano-IKZ
    Trojano 2873
    AdLoader-KH
    PurityScan-V
    PurityScan-AF
    Trojan-gen
    NTRootKit-B
    Zlob-ZZ

This is what I've done so far:

    updated my virus protection

ran a program named "combo-fix" (from the internet)

ran Avast on-access scanner (many times)

performed "generate a VRDB now" (Avast)

ran Avast anit-virus on local disks and folders (thorough-many times)

received a message that wouldn't go away about Sonic Update Manager; went to Dell on-line support and went through a double process that messed up my set-up (registry?) -

had to reinstall MS Word setup; Program Update link no longer works

ran Ad-Aware (thorough) removed about 20 critical tracking cookies and about 250 suspiciious cookies

Windows Explorer constantly gives a "This program is not responding" message and closes.

I'm cleaning (controlling) with Avast and Ad-Aware; am so far following many of your suggestions, but I am not savvy about viruses, nor have I ever before had a problem. Could I get specific help from you for the problems?

    Thank you,
    Fourthwind

Thank you for your help. I've just completed the Read Me and Run First list of instructions, and the pop-up problem appears to be fixed. AVG didn't have a report. The other two are attached. I had run Combofix a few days ago also without your instructions. Afterward, I had lost access to Program Updates.

    Concerns I'll be watching for: earlier, I wasn't able to copy from the internet into a Word document, but I could copy the same into an email message; IE has been "not responding" a lot and then shutting down; I think I deleted URL Assistant - is that important?; clicking on links does not always open them;

    You did not attach anything.

I have now succeeded in attaching the files generated after finishing your background process yesterday (except for AVG, which only check 32 files and found nothing).

Today, I ran Avast and (surprisingly) cleaned out 15 TratBHOs and 1 Adware-gen. So, there are problems still to be resolved. That log is also attached.

I've gotton two error messages: "Error status code is 503" and "HTTP Status 500 - Server encountered an internal error () that..." This second message closed down IE.

    Thank you.

First we need to remove a malware service.
    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Security Service
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteKKVG into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.
Okay now we need to use a new tool.
    • Download and save to RenV.exe to your Desktop (must be on the Desktop)
    • Now Copy the bold text in the below code box to notepad. Save it as Log.txt to your desktop. (It must be on your Desktop).
    Code:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm .exe
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask .exe

    • Now using your mouse, drag Log.txt onto RenV.exe
    • When finished, RenV.exe will produce a new log names Log.txt on your Desktop I will ask for this log later.
    Uninstall the below software:
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77A1F34C-6E36-4550-BA8E-BBFB101F6101} - C:\Program Files\Windows NT\niqytecuC:\WINDOWS\system32\t8\tycodllz83122.exe.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask .exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MCUpdateExe] c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcupdate.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: iifeded - iifeded.dll (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava.dll
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Chaslang,

Thank you for clear and superb guidance on a project that I, a programming novice, imagined would be insurmountable. Everything appears to be working very well. Here's what I've done with a few questions. Again, thank you, thank you. ---- Fourthwind

    What I’ve done:
    · Received a Dell message: “Clean up your start-up programs list – contains invalid entries”; clicked “Fix it”
    · Deleted infected files from Avast Virus Chest
    · Re-installed CCleaner
    · Removed malware service: KKVG
    · Reset computer to “show” hidden files (an uncertain decision)
    · Ran HJT: didn’t know if I had it in MGtools (in fact, had to find out what it was first), so downloaded it
    · Downloaded RenV and added HJT .txt file
    · Uninstalled [removed] Viewpoint Media Player (sorry about the oversight)
    · Mistakenly ran MGtools.exe and then ran analyse.exe; couldn’t find O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MCUpdateExe] c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcupdate.exe; fixed and exited HJT
    · Installed and ran Avenger; inserted quote; rebooted
    · Re-installed Sun Java (25 minutes; is my computer slow or normal?)
    · Ran CCleaner; do not understand “other User Accounts,” so didn’t check that
    · Ran GetLogs.bat

    Questions:
    · Do I return Hidden Files and Folders to “Hide” again?
    · Does KKVG remain permanently deleted?
    · Does MSconfig remain in Normal mode indefinitely?
    · I did a system restore after I produced the logs on 1/17. Was this correct?
    · Which virus/trojan protection do you advise I keep on the computer? I’ve installed many new programs in addition to Avast and Ad-Aware, which were already on it.
    · From the Start menu, I had an option, Program Updates. It’s now termed “invalid” and “not installed.” How do I get that back?

Minor concern: Internet Properties Privacy setting is “Accept all cookies.” Is this okay?

I did not tell you to do anything with HijackThis other than running analyse.exe which is part of MGtools. Don't do anything unless we ask you to do it.

What HJT.txt file? I said make a Log.txt file and drag it on top of RenV.exe. Did you do this? I thinks so based on your new MGlogs.zip file.

It does take a long time to get Sun Java installed. I'm not sure what the normal time is but 25 minutes does seem a little high.

Not this is not necessary nor desireable. It gives malware many easy hiding places.
    Yes!

Normal Startup mode should be how you always run unless you are performing temporary debugging of a problem. MSconfig should not be used to control startups on a long term basis.

If you mean you restored to an old restore point, then this was very incorrect as it just restore any malware that was just removed. If you mean you turned system restore off and then turned it back on to delete all old restore points, this is not a major issue but you should not have done this until we said all malware has been removed.

Covered later. Note Ad-Aware does not provide any protection. It is only an after the fact scanner and not a very good one anymore. Ad-Aware 2007 is not on my list of things to install since it is not that effective and it installs resource hogging service that is always running. Not desirable for a program that is not offering you any protection.

Not sure what you mean. Are you talking about Windows Updates?

Cookies are not problems to be concerned with so this is fine.

    Look in the below folder:
    c:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService

Tell me how many files with names like isuspm.exe or isuspm .exe do you see and tell me the exact file size and date. Get file size in byte by right clicking on the file and select Properties.

It is possible that your install shield program may have to be reinstalled (if you use it or relie on it for updates). This is because it was infected and still could be.

Delete the below files. Let me know whether you succeed in finding and deleting these.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache(2).dsk
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache(3).dsk
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache(4).dsk

Other than the above your logs were clean. I will give you final instructions after I get the results from the above.

    Found the following in InstallShield\UpdateService:

    ISUSPM.exe 249,856 bytes
(Next, “Created” and “Modified” appear backward, but this is the way it reads)
    Created: 1/21/2008
    Modified: 1/13/2008

ISUSPM.exe.manifest 586 bytes “opens with unknown application”
    Created: 6/16/2004
    Modified: 6/16/2004

ISSCH.exe 81,920 bytes (included here because of its date)
    Created: 1/13/2008
    Modified: 1/13/2008

    Deleted the following files:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache(2).dsk
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache(3).dsk
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache(4).dsk

Concerning my questions in the previous reply, my hand has been appropriately slapped! Startup mode is set to Normal, and files and extensions are NOT hidden, as per your online instructions. Program updates (not working) may have been the location of Windows Security System, where the Install Shield is located.

Latest Developments: after sending the logs on 1/20, did a system scan and deleted 12 infections (privacy objects, cookies).

After completing your suggestions on 1/21, did another scan and deleted 25 more; went online briefly, and then did another scan; deleted 5 more.

For the past week, when I exit Internet Explorer, I get a message: “This program is not responding and must close.” Details give this: SzAppName: iexplore.exe MadName: ntdll.dll (among others).

I’ve just received an additional message on top of the previouw: “Dr. Watson Post Mortem debugger has encountered a problem and must close.” Event type: BEX P1: drwtsn32.exe P2: 5.1.2600.0 P3: 367d84a2 P4: dbghelp.dll P5: 5.1.2600.2180 (up to P9). Then the computer locked.

    Thank you ---

I'm not sure what you mean? Windows Security System has nothing to do with InstallShield. What exactly are you trying to say? Are you saying Windows Update (which is Microsoft's Updating or Windows) does not work? Or are you saying the InstallShield program that looks for updates to software on your computer is not working? For the InstallShield not working (which is what I assume is the problem and was due to the infection you had), do the below registry patch:

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
As I already stated in my previous message, cookies are not problems. Stop worrying about them.

More than likely both of these are not related to malware. You should discuss these and give exact word for word error messages with error numbers if anyt are given in the Software Forum.

    Chaslang,

I completed the Registry Fixme. You had thought my InstallShield program may need to be reinstalled. Is is okay now?

    I received Windows/Microsoft updates yesterday.

The Program Updates (aka InstallShield Update Manager) link in the Start Menu is inoperable, so I'll probably delete it (and in All Users).

There are a number of small problems that I may address later when I have complete descriptions. The major problem now - "Program not responding" for IE - I'll deal with via the software forum as you suggested. I'm looking for options short of reinstalling Internet Explorer. Would a switch to Mozilla's Firefox browser be advisable?

Question: if I do NOT have MSConfig set to run on startup, how do I block programs like RealSched.exe and QTTask.exe. from running?

Please remember to give me suggestions on the malware progams/measures I should use with my computer.

    Thank you,
    Southwind

I expected it would be broken by the malware. You can try reinstalling it if you use it. I actually uninstall it from my PCs because I want to be in charge of getting and installing updates as I see fit. For some people who are not good at staying updated, using InstallShield could be a good idea.

Yes and it is recommend in our final instructions on How to protect yourself which are given further down in this message.

We already did that in message number 6 by permanently removing them with HijackThis. You have other items you can remove the same way (these are not malware, they are just not needed). Here is what I'm referring to:
You makware problems have been resolved.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    9. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    10. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    11. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    12. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    13. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Avast exposed the following. Before I complete your instructions, does this suggest a bug is still there?

I have completed your final instructions and have read through "How to Protect Yourself...." I will decide on the security measures and address the IE in a different forum.

Thank you again for your superb help.
