I'm upgrading my computer and want to get a new power supply. I'm just wondering, if I got one that was for example 500W, would that have any negative effect on my computer due to the extra/unused W?

Absolutely nothing. It just means you've got more headroom should you need it.

Only go for a name brand dont look at the wattage, its better to go for a 400w enermax, antec, tagan, ultra x ect than a 500w generic
