I have a P3 700mhz with 512mb ram, that someone gave me. I got a new hard drive, installed windows xp pro and it works ok.

I had an old HP Deskjet 812c that i hooked up, it recognized it, installed the drivers and said it was ready to go.

I opened a word file and tried to print. The print manager opened but the file won't print. I tried rebooting, shutting the printer, and everything else the troubleshooter said but still nothing.

Any suggestions? I'm going to try a new cable, but wouldn't the old cable be OK of the computer recognized the printer?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I also tried printing from other programs and I see the document in the print manager but no output on the printer.

Yes, the printer is seen and the latest driver was installed. I checked the article but I have the printer set up as LPT1.

It might be this simple mistake I've done before. In the printer window where all the documents are listed that are being printed, there should be an option in the menu to pause printing. Just a shot in the dark.

I tried the printer using a USB cable and it works fine. The problem is I need the LPT to print from my company's accounting software.

    Anybody????

You can try changing LPT modes in the bios.

If you goto Start > Printers and Faxes menu and rightclick your printer > Properties > Ports and is their a tick in an LPT port?

Could it be that the printspooler service isn't on?

Which is why I asked if the printer was seen in Printers and Faxes, if the spooler service is stopped the printers disapear from that folder, until the service is started again, good thought tho.

came across this while catching up on all the posts I have missed, this from Browniz may help with using the USB cable as its OK I presume and prints fine? to allocate it to a virtual LPT port using the USB connection http://forum.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=639158&postcount=7

I had the same problem,I installed XP Pro and I'm using my old HP Printer Deskjet 882C. I tried everything, patches, new drivers, ect, ect, when you click print from your tool bar nothing happens ( the printer does not turn on automaticly and print like before ). In my case if you turn the printer on first then click print everything works just fine. Just remember the printer has to be turned on first,I hope this helps you.
