Based on the below copy/paste (of a Chaslang reply), I would presume the same would apply in my case now, as my Startup mode seems to be "locked" into "Selective".

I have changed it (several times) to "Normal", immediately rebooted, and gone back to check it immediately, only to find it reset again back into "Selective".

Should I ignore Selective Startup Mode and proceed with the Read/Run Me? Do I have any choice/option?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Yes it is possible! Just continue thru with the rest of the READ & RUN ME and we will deal with this when we can. For all we know, you could already be in Normal Startup mode anyway.

Yup....just continue. If something doesn't work, let us know, but continue with the procedures. :)

Great - thank you, however ....

It seems to have resolved itself (or I seem to have resolved it?) by switching Software Firewall progs. And it also seems, that once again, I have traded-off "some" security, for "some" performance (?).

I switched from Online Armor (free) to PC Tools (also free), and PC Tools seems to be getting along better with Firefox 3.0.5 (on this machine), but it is failing my long-trusted "Leak-Test" (from grc.com).

Once again, I am perfectly perplexed as to what I should do. But thank you again, TimW - I do greatly appreciate your help - and patience!

As you know, no program is perfect as new malware is written daily and it takes time for the programmers to catch up with the new definitions.

The security issue ( as I am sure you have read the "How to protect yourself..............." becomes one of user habits. If you read the malware threads, you will see a fairly common thread --> downloads, cracks, torrents and click habits. :)

WHAT??? "NO PROGRAM IS PERFECT!!!???!!! Kidding. Thanks for the hints/clues/etc. Now all I gotta do is find-out what the heck "torrents" and "cracks" are (heard of `em, but not really sure, other than "BAD STUFF") and guessing that "click habits" means 'porn-sites, etc'. (?).

Among other protections, I use McAfee's Site Advisor for just about anything that's not already saved in my Bookmarks/Favorites (as well as Yahoo's "Safe-Search", also from McAfee, but appears to me a somewhat different protocol).

Thanks again! And I'll be reading A LOT more from the Malware Forum from here-on-out.

Click habits could refer to that, but I meant more in the line of clicking pop ups and clicking on email attachments and links.

Quite often, in the malware forum as well as other forums, we see that the problem exists between chair and keyboard ( PEBCAK ) ....:-D
    Stay safe. :)

;) - Got it. I was sorta including pop-up's, links and attachments in with the "etc.".

Not exactly sure what "PEBCAK" stands for, but I'm guessing along the lines of :zzz "Operator Error" :zzz
