I don't really know what's going on right now. Recently, my power went out in my house, and I had to restart my computer. When I did, my windows auto update patcher started it's work, downloading a new patch and what not. When it normally finishes, it usually asks me to restart my computer, but this time it didn't. After it finished, I kept my computer on, and the windows update icon stayed in my system try...but it's not downloading anything. I opened up my system processes and found out that it's running off of my user name, and not with all the rest of the system processes. It's still on, and it's not downloading anything. I fear that it may be spyware, and I have run AdAware 6.0, and HiJackThis, but I don't know how to read the logs to tell what's good and what's bad.

Can someone help, or at least offer some advice?

Ad-aware 6.0 is out of date.

The first steps are to please follow all the steps in this Sticky thread < READ ME FIRST: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal >

If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

I had the same situation...I turned off the Auto update (under System in control panel) and that cleared the system tray. You can then turn on auto update, or Notify, which I use, and decide to try downloading again if you get a notification message.
