Problem with system hibernation

lateley, when i have been putting my laptop into hibernate, i have been having problems. sometimes it will come back fine. sometimes it wont come back at all, and just freeze at the resume screen. other times it will seem to freeze at the resume screen, but, if left long enough, will resume. i dont know what the problem could be. the only thing i can think of is a bad boot sector on the hard disk, but since technically this isnt a hardware problem, i posted it here...
any suggestions?
