I have completed all of the steps in your guide and I am going to attach all of the log files. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried to post the BitDefender log but it said it is too large. I'm attaching the other logs requested.

You need to run AVG Antispyware again and this time Quarantine or Delete all that it finds. You did not take any action according to your log. There is no sense in running the scans if you don't fix what they find. Run it again and attach a new log.

Put it into a ZIP file and attach the ZIP file.

Then you need to uninstall this Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 as requested in step 6 of the READ ME and then install the current version of SUn Java from the link given in step 6.

Then you need to uninstall the below as requested in step 0 of the READ ME:
    KaZaA Lite 2.0.0
    Viewpoint Media Player

Now you will need to attach a new log from ShowNew.

Why are you running your PC with no antivirus and no software firewall?

I thought I had deleted what AVG had found. I ran it again and deleted everything that it found.

I uninstalled Java and installed the new version. I also removed Viewpoint.

I really don't want to have to remove Kazaa. I've run that for years and it's never caused me a problem. But I no longer have the download to install it. So if I remove it I won't be able to reinstall it.

Why did you attach the ShowNew.zip file you downloaded from here? You were supposed to put your BitDefender log into a ZIP file and upload it. Please do this.

No form of Kazaa should be used. It is major source of infected PCs, but it's your PC. If you are willing to deal with the risks of having it on your PC and don't mind getting infections.....well that's your decision.

You did not address my question:
    Let's continue with your cleanup.
    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Here is the Combofix log.

As far as Antivirus...I was running Norton and someone recommended that I uninstall it before running spyware removal programs.

I have a router with a firewall. Do I need a software firewall too?

If so, what do you guys recommend? Also, is there better free antivirus software out there that you recommend?

I will attach the other logs in another reply.

The system isn't having too many problems. Once in a while I get music playing out of nowhere. Also getting a couple of popups telling me to install Windows antispyware software. I just X the window when that comes up.

You MUST rename HijackThis.exe as requested in step 7 of the READ ME. You have the exact infection that makes this necessary. Please do this now and then continue on with my next instructions.

Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
[*]It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
[*]Run HostsXpert.exe, click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
[*]Click the X to exit the program
Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {29C7EB89-A21A-4F3F-B046-E382F90EB4E0} - C:\Program Files\NetMeeting\rywykope83122.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A1EE2060-9702-4B8D-965A-058628C5A3CE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhhi.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exe"
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: nnnmlig - nnnmlig.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I followed all of the steps and am attaching the logs.

System seems to be running fine. The problems were not happening all of the time so I'll have to wait and see.

Thank you so much for all of your time and effort. Let me know if there is anything else that I should do.

Also, any free antivirus software that you recommend? Do you think I need a software firewall if I have a router with a firewall?

    You're welcome!

My final instructions (below) will give you info on this.

Yes it is highly recommended. Free firewalls are also in my final instructions.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
