problem with Windows Media Player in Vista

I have the same problem and ran regsvr32 wmp.dll, and it told me it registered. Still won't run. Then I ran the sfc /scannow, and it created a huge file, but I have no idea what to look for in the log file. It did tell me at the end of running it that there were issues it could not fix.

I have a Dell and have a DVD supplied by them, but I found a note somewhere that said you can't use the DVD, as I have SP2 on the latop, and the DVD indicates it is SP1. I thought I might be able to do a repair to Vista.

Personally I wish I never got Vista, as although it's "thinks it's smart", it's a PITA!

Appreciate what I might try, short of doing a total format and reinstall.

Oh - and just checked the Event Viewer and found this:

Faulting application wmplayer.exe, version 11.0.6002.18111, time stamp 0x4aa91411, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00000000, process id 0x1524, application start time 0x01cb04a90f8f1cfc.

    And:

    Fault bucket 1540495013, type 1
    Event Name: APPCRASH
    Response: None
    Cab Id: 0

    Problem signature:

    Hi

Is this 32bit or 64bit Vista?

Have you tried Safe Mode (F8 at boot) to see of WMP crashes still as this can lead to a 3rd party add on causing this over WMP itself?

Do you have any CODEC packs installed if so what one/s?

Can you attach the BugReport file thats located here C:\Users\debbie\AppData\Local\Temp\WER339D.tmp.version.txt

How to attach files guide HERE

It's 32 bit, and that file doesn't appear - not sure why.

Halo - forgot to respond to one of your questions. I did go in to Safe Mode and attempted to run Media Player and nothing happened. Went in to Task Manager, but did not find it showing as running.

On the Codec packs, how do I find that out? I don't believe I ever downloaded any, but not sure if my wife did.

The only Codec pack I see listed in Programs is "Nikon RAW Codec". That one has been installed since we got our Nikon camera, and that was about three months ago. The WMP just started puking a few days ago. I've found out through searches on this great website that for whatever reason, WPM is embedded in VISTA. Thanks Bill!

Can you right click WMP and select "run as administrator"? For some people, that is the only way it will work.

Plodr - thanks for that suggestion, but that doesn't work either. Same message that "Media Player has stopped working". Pretty frustrating.
