Hi Everyone! I am a newbie to this extremely useful forum (I spent the last couple of days checking out the MG site just to get some 'education' - and 'I'm a believer'!!!)

I have a desperate problem...I caught a trojan called ByteVerify, which I think was detected and (partly?) eliminated by NAV and Bulldog virus protection progs. Apparently it is a variant of the CW trojan, so I also run CWShredder. Unfortunately my IE connection post infection (and removal?) was incredibly slow and jerky (even though before it was perfect - I have 512 ADSL connection over a Windows XP OS), so I figured something else was still wrong. I delved into the registry BUT...a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and I am a newbie! I don't think I made any serious changes (basically I searched for the word 'cool' - as in CoolWeb/CoolSearch trojan - and then removed the remaining entries pointing to those web-sites associated with the trojan)

yet, alas, the problem persisted even after I tried downloading various MG utilities to clean up memory, optimise cache etc etc

Finally I reinstalled the XP OS without overriding any data files (BTW: in order to clean up the trojan, I was advised to disable system restore option, so can't go back to an earlier restore point - and to be honest wouldn't know how to anyway!) and NOW, when I try to connect to the internet, I am forced to resetup my ADSL modem connection, but go to settings/connect to internet/set up my connection manually/.....and then on the next screen, the first two options (including the 'connect using a broadband modem that requires a user name and password') are blanked out!!! HEEEELLLP - what do I do to get that setting back? Your cumulative advice and joint wisdom would be MUCH appreciated !!!!!

    Cheers

I'd love to help you out, my man... it sounds like you've still got some traces of malicious code or registry entries still on your computer. I don't really know what to tell you, but I'm sure someone here can help you. Give them a chance to research the problem a bit, and in the meantime, perhaps you could research the trojan you contracted a little more and find out exactly what it puts on your computer and what it does in detail.

I'm guessing here, so keep that in mind, but... if the options for your user name and password are unavailable (grayed out) then I would suspect a registry entry somewhere. I hope you can resolve your problem, and I'm sure the people here can be of some help. Hang in there and give them a chance to dig deeper into the problem.

    Nope, nope :)

Its not malicious code doing it.

In fact, his reinstall did it.

    These should help you:

I literally deal with this little glitch around 15 times a day.

    And I'm not bragging, I'm complaining :(

I totally understand. And to be honest, I've seen you advise a lot of people on the boards, Adrynalyne, and it definately shows that you've dealt with and experienced these problems before. In other words... you're good, man!.

...and so another case closed successfully...Elementary dear Watson you could say..:D
