Problems Getting Rid Of Trojan.Vundo

I'm somewhat new to the world of computers so please bare with me. My Norton Antivirus program tells me that I've got the Trojan.Vundo virus on my computer. My computer has been running very slow so I suspect this is the cause. Are there any other problems this virus can cause?

I tried downloading the fix from the symatec web site but for some reason it wouldn't let me. This is when I did a search and found the Major Geeks forums. I hope someone here can walk me through this. Here's what I've done so far: I followed the instructions 1-3 on the Read & Run Me with success. When I got to step #4, (Downloading Tools), I couldn't download them for some reason. It said it was downloading them but it never asked me where I wanted to download them to, and I can't find them on my computer. Isn't there a specific tool for this virus that I can download without having to use all these other programs? I'm sorry for my lack of knowledge but I'm learning. Thanks for any help you can give.

Please download Spy Sweeper

• Click the link above to download the program.
• Install it. Once the program is installed, it will open.
• It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
• Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
• Click the Sweep Options tab.
• Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
  
  • Sweep Memory
  • Sweep Registry
  • Sweep Cookies
  • Sweep All User Accounts
  • Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
  • Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
  • Sweep for Rootkits
  • Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
• Click Sweep Now on the left side.
• Click the Start button.
• When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
• Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
• It will remove all of the items found.
• Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
• Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
• Paste the contents of the session log you copied into notepad and save it as spysweeper.txt and attach it to your next post along with a fresh HJT log.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply to my problem. I followed your instructions and attempted to download Spy Sweeper but had the same problem I've been having. I clicked on your link and the following appeared: "Your download of Spy Sweeper will automatically start in a few seconds...Click here if it does not." Well it didn't start so I clicked where it asked me to and nothing happened. This is the same problem I had with trying to download Symantic's Removal Tool for this virus. I clicked the download link and nothing happened. My computer's been acting really weird with the cursor jumping all over the place and other weird things. It's very frustrating when you follow instructions to the letter and nothing happens. I don't know where to go from here.

Are you using Cable/DSL internet? If so, try going into Safe Mode /w Networking and download Spy Sweeper.

 

Okay, I downloaded it and ran it. It came back "Congratulations! No software was detected."

Question: Until I can get this thing figured-out and removed, how do I go about getting rid of the pop-up window from Norton AntiVirus that warns me a virus has been detected on my computer? I click OK and it just keeps coming right back. Thanks for your continued support.

Did you get the latest updates for SpySweeper? You should have (577) of the definitions.
