using emachine, running win xp, x-password generator won't delete from control panel without rebooting FIRST. don't wanna reboot in fear of not starting back up. is this a threat?

I'm not familiar with this x-password generator thing. I don't really know what it does or where it is (in the registry? in a checkpoint? on C:?). I read the link to the other forum that was provided above by BladesofHalo, but I'm still not entirely sure of the best course of action. That forum says to run Smit Fix and Ewido. ScottieDon't has AVG.

So, my question is: should I (a.)run Smit Fix and skip Ewido, (b.)try to remove it in safe mode, (c.)go through the MajorGeeks malware steps and run a hijack log, or (d.)do something else that I'm not thinking of?

One of my major concerns is that turning the computer off without fixing it will somehow make it worse when we reboot, because that has happened to me in the past.

What malware removal instructions did you complete? as they wouldnt have been from this site as we dont advise running Hijackthis from this location C:\DOCUME~1\General\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe , with the original .exe name still evident and from a zip file.

to fully review whats going on with your PC, please follow the below an attach the requested logs, they may seem alot of steps to follow but do floow them as laid out as they are very very sucessful, once you have attached the logs if anything is remaining some tailored removal instructions will be posted for you to follow to mop up the remaining malware... good luck :)

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
