    My computer is currently infected with a possible virus, malware, spyware or rootkit( I am not sure which one) called Protector.exe. Webroot spy sweeper, hijackthis is unable to detect it. It copies itelf to cd's, floppies, flash drives when files are being written and creates an autorun with the following entries

    [autorun]
    shellexecute=protector.exe
    action=Open folder to view files
    shell\infected=Open
    shell\infected\command=protector.exe
    shell=infected

    It doesn't seem to be active in winxp but in win 98 it forces the users to insert a diskette. The Floppy disk drive is continually active if diskette is not inserted.

    How can I get rid of it.

    Thank in advance.

    Are you running Windows 98? Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST and if you have Windows 98, please pay special attention to the instructions for Windows 98 users. If you have a dual-boot computer with both Win XP and Win98, please run the scans on the Win98 OS. If you have two different computers with two different operating systems, please stay with only one in this thread and let us know which computer you are referring to.
