Proxy Server Help

    I am using an FTP server and i can connect to it from home, but no one else can. I have read that the cause could be a proxy server, and I will have to configure it. I don't even no what a proxy server is so can you explain to me what it is and where I can find it on my computer. I have Telus DSL and I think they make u use proxy servers.
