I have always been on dial-up, and I’m O.K. with it. But lately it’s been slower and I’ve noticed that the double-monitor icon at the bottom right of the screen is always lit up. I assume this means there is information either being sent or received, but I really don’t know for sure. What is strange is that even if I stop the download by clicking ‘stop’ [X], the double-monitor icon is still lit up. Even if I turn the browser off and have nothing running at all, it’s still lit up. This did not used to be the case so can someone explain what has changed? How can I configure my computer to open only the website that I want and nothing else?

Also, will an anti-virus program slow my dial-up Internet connection down?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

If your PC is still connected to your modem, then there is still activity which is require to keep the hardware in sync and so that the connection is maintained.

That's what it does by default unless you have malware problems or are having pop up problems due to various websites you may be accessing.

Your dial-up connection is so slow to begin with that an antivirus or anything else that you add for protection should not have any effect on you connection. Only the noise on your analog line will have an effect on your modem training and retraining rates during the interval of your connection.
