    I have 2 machines.
    Both are Small Form Factors.
    1 is a Gateway E-4100 with a Prescott P4 2.8GHz HT CPU.
    1 is a Compaq evo with a Northwood P4 2.53GHz.
Both are running XP Home with SP3.
On startup, the Compaq shows a 32F CPU temp with SpeedFan.
The Gateway shows 85F CPU with SpeedFan.
Both machines are sitting in the same room side by side.
    Why the difference?
And yes, I have confirmed that SpeedFan is set to F on both.

    Hi

My GUESS is that it's due to the frequency difference (2.8 vs. 2.53GHz) and the cases' designs differ slightly, changing how they cool.

    Hello,
Northwoods run cooler than Prescotts of the same core speed. Approx 10°C or 50°F.

Both SOUND plausible, but I'm still skeptical at that type of difference.

Actually... are you SURE? 32F? That's water freezing temperature. Is your PC in the snow? :-D

32F or 0C is what SpeedFan showed.
I might wear glasses but I can still read those numbers.
Actually thought it was C until I checked in the Options and saw that I wasn't seeing things.
And no, just in an unheated garage.

Well, that's a nice temp for sure!

Not worried about overheating, for sure.:-D
Still puzzled about that huge of a difference. :confused
Figured there would be some, but that much?rolleyes

I was curious. Can you see what your CPU temperature is in BIOS?

And if it doesn't show in the BIOS, try something like Speccy or HWMonitor just to get a second opinion. A CPU that runs cool enough you can make ice cubes with it is a great thing, if it's true. If not, something's wrong with either SpeedFan or the sensor, and that can lead to bad things... which would be a shame.

Will try Speccy and HWMonitor in the morning.
    At work right now.

Speccy didn't show the temp. for the CPU.
HWMonitor just opened to a white box with nothing in it.
Could also not find anything in the BIOS.
Maybe the motherboard is not SMART compatible?
Even after folding all night, still shows 32F.
I would have expected to see some amount of increase.

I have seen readings of 0°C (32°F) and -137°C (-214.6°F) on motherboards before when the temperature sensor is not connected or not implemented. So it's not unusual, just ignore that particular sensor.

There should definitely have been an increase. The sensor might be busted, or might not be there... Does your BIOS give temperature reads?

Oh, and if the Compaq has an Intel motherboard, you might be able to get utilities from their website for it, that can help with temperature readings if you're worried.

Definitely sounds like the sensor isn't there, isn't connected, or isn't working.
