Question re problem during READ/RUN FIRST

    Hi

I've currently working through the "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide" thread on my brothers PC having sorted my own a while back this way.

I'm encountering some trouble on Malwarebytes though. After running the scan and clicking Remove Selected, the program freezes and crashes while quaranting: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Data Protection

Is there something I can do to overcome this and finish the Removal process and so get a Scan log? Or shall I skip this program and continue with the rest of the steps in the thread?

    Cheers

Your answer is posted at the very beginning of the READ & RUN ME. The below is a direct quote;)

Thanks for that, I had read it but wanted to make sure. :-o

So I've now finished the Read & Run Me First thread as much as I can. I'm attaching the logs - there are only 4, I couldn't get the Malwarebytes one.

The problem with the PC is that the Internet isn't working despite a good connection. The CD/DVD drives also don't appear to work, and I understand the USb drives weren't working either although this last issue seems to have solved itself as I've been able to use a USB stick.

    Appreciate any help.

The RRlog was too large to attach (at 522 KB), so I've simply split it into two .txt documents. Not sure if that's the right thing to do.

May not be due to remaining malware; but, let's see what happens after we finish the rest of your cleanup.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: adwua.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: atdyyv.exe (User 'Default user')

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  6. Nero

    Nero Private E-2

    Logs attached.

Things are no better, as the same problems persist. Incidentally DVDs run OK but CDs don't work.

    Thanks

As I said before, not likely to be due to remaining malware. However this PC had a ton of malware issues to begin with which are now mostly ( some remain to be fixed below ) and you could be suffering from the residual damage. It is also quite possible that McAfee is the cause of your problems especially since it appears that you may have installed it while all of ZoneAlarm had not been removed. You should try uninstalling McAfee right now ( do not reinstall yet ) before continuing and then running the below too:

    McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

While it is still a good idea to remove McAfee, I think your problem is a hardware issue because your logs show that there are no network interface cards present in your PC which would either mean
    1. You don't have any installed
    2. Or the drivers for them are missing
    3. Or they are just broken

Definitely not due to malware. Check your hardware or the CDs you are trying on another PC.

Now with McAfee removed, let's cleanup a few additional items and see where things stand.

Now we need to use ComboFix

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi

    Logs attached.

Problems are still the same as before. I'll check what you mention about the hardware.

    Thanks

Okay we are done with what we can do here. I suggest that you work in the Networking Forum for you network issues. One thing you may want to try is deleting your hardware from Device Manager and then rebooting. After reboot, reinstall the drivers for your hardware.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps. I'm excluding the normal disabling of System Restore right now since you could still need it in order to try to fix your networking issues. But once you have that repaired and no more malware problems, you should toggle System Restore off (disabled) and then back on (enabled).
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Done this now. Thanks a lot for your help. I'll try to fix the hardware problem.

Is it OK to reinstall McAfee yet, or should I wait until the hardware issue is resolved?

    Thanks

Yes you could reinstall it now even though you have no network connection just to have local offline protection.
