I have three questions all relating to messenger, somewhat...

    1. Well I've been wondering is there any way to identifiy the ip of a messenger service message?

    2. I tried sending messages to my friends as jokes (with net send), some being a bit new to computers but messenger won't let me send the command even to myself.

    "C:\Documents and Settings\****>net send 127.0.0.1 hi
An error occurred while sending a message to 127.0.0.1.

The message alias could not be found on the network.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2273.

    C:\Documents and Settings\****>NET HELPMSG 2273

The message alias could not be found on the network.

    EXPLANATION

This message alias could not be located.

    ACTION

Check the spelling of the message alias. If it is correct, then the computer that is to receive your message may be busy. Try sending the message again later."

And messenger is enabled...If anyone can shed some light on this, it would be greatly appreciated....BUT I just tried something new, I tried using my IP instead of 127.0.0.1 and it worked....Seeing as how it said network I thought maybe it only would send network messages and I guess I was right...Okay well I just sort of solved my question but how do I make it send messages to computers on the internet and not only my "network"....? (Sorry if it didn't make much sense)

    3. What exactly could I find out with somebodies IP? I've heard from a couple people you could find Name and whatnot but I have no idea how to do that. I mean I know of the arin whois database but other than that I'm completely lost. What can I do to find more about would-be hackers and the sort.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    -BB.

If you're going down that LONG road of becoming a hacker... you'd better be ethical in your work. As I'm sure you've heard or read many times before... the art of hacking is strictly to gain knowledge and learn about how computers work and the power they have. If you're not ethical in your work, then you will be looked down upon by many, many people, and it may also land you in serious legal problems... which could happen whether you are ethical or not. I am by no means a hacker and would never claim to have such knowledge, but I'm not exactly a beginner at the art either. I could teach you a few things I know, and help you along your way if you'd like, as I have many, many files and information that can help a beginner. But as I've stressed in this post... if you want to get into this to cause havoc and mischieve, then don't bother e-mailing me.

Uhh...how is gathering information about people who try to mess with you making me a hacker? I'll give you an example somebody was messing on my site posting comments and of course I logged their IP, I knew it was someone in my school and I pretty much pinpointed it down to who it could be...with name or address I would have proof...IP isn't exactly proof to AOLers...
    like "You're the 128.46.246.35!"...
    Reply: ".......What?"

The same applies to messenger service, it's quite legal...or why would microsoft add it to every computer with it enabled already?

Anyway....you didn't answer my questions so if you have knowledge it would be awfully nice for you to share it...

    Regards,
    -BB.

    BB,
Are you using Norton Inernet Security 2003? The reason why I asked that is because NIS 2003 has a neat feature of tracing the IP with trace route on a colored map. It gives you a truck load of information from the name of the network to the company who is using that range of IP addresses and in some cases down to the address of the individual(s) who is doing the dirt, along with other information. You might want to check into it . Or then again I could be going crazy and life is just a padded room:D

Sadly I don't have it...but wow, I've never heard of addresses...o_O;; That is sort of scary...Direct Connect with someone on aim and bam they can start stalking you. Anyway...if anybody can answer the rest of the questions, it'd help. Thanks again.

do you have another kind of firewall that might be blocking it?

Disabled firewall and still 127.0.0.1 won't work (including other IPs) My theory is it will only send to computers on this network...127.0.0.1 probably isn't recognized and my computer isn't networked so I can basically only send it to myself. Uhh sorry if I'm confusing...well I still have other questions too please...Thanks again.
