Questions about win repair and dual boot

Hello,
today I have had only troubles with my laptop, first my keyboard died (checked if everything is plugged in etc, still didn't work) and later on when I am trying start the computer I get the blue screen which disappears after a second and restarts my system, so I can't check anything what's causing it on my stationary PC. I attached external keyboard and it works, however I can't start safe mode as it crashes as well, so I have to reinstall windows because I think some files are corrupted.°

I have C (windows drive), D (important files), E (empty drive).
I am able to boot from an win xp CD, however the problem lies there - I have a half done coursework on windows drives desktop and some other works which I have to save as the deadlines for them is closing in.°

Questions:
1: If I repair existing installation on drive C, will it delete the files which are on the desktop or just "refresh" the windows system files?
2: If I install a new windows on drive E for dual boot, will I be able to access files which are on C drives "desktop"?

Those might be rather primitive questions, but I really don't want in end to use a tool to recover deleted files

Seeems I can't edit my post, anyway, seems that drive C is empty for no reason and I am installing windows on drive E as we speak. Can anyone suggest me any freeware software to recover deleted files?
