Questions on virtual private network?

    How does VPN work? Are there freeware VPN out there, any on this site?

    I live with 4 others using a single wifi box. My question is whether or not I can surf privately with VPN on my laptop only? Can they track back to the box?

    And is it a wise to turn it on only some of the time? Do I have to leave it running all of the time?


    Any help would be nice.:)
