Quick question about Microsoft.NET Framework Version 1.1

This keeps popping up in Win update as a "suggested" update. What is it and do I need this? Thanks, Tate

 

.net is microsoft's "proprietary" new set of programming languages. essentially, it allows you to run programs written on the newest versions of microsoft's languages (eg c#). even though it's probably not needed at all for websurfing or just run-of-the-mill programs, other programs you download may have be written in one of the newer languages. it won't hurt to install framework 1.1 (i did), but it's not a total loss not to install it just yet.
