RAM Problem - Beeping Sound

    Hello,

I purchased 1gb of RAM and thought it could be installed easily enough. I got round to installing it there a few minutes ago and after connecting it properly, I then started up the computer.

The computer was making the right noises until I seen the screen go from 'active mode' (where Windows XP is usually displayed) to some sort of sleep mode or 'inactive' mode - in the CPU saving mode or whatever it's known as.

I then heard a constant beep coming from the Tower, at an interval of every few seconds. I couldn't understand what it could be, the RAM was slotted in right (I'd even turned the tower sideways so I could properly insert it) - I then removed the new RAM and hit start-up - expecting the same to happen, and then it booted completely fine.

The RAM I got is compatiable with my system and my motherboard is capable of holding the RAM (mb can hold up to 3gig) and I'm only running 512 (without the new stick obviously) over the space of three slots.

I assume the nice beeping sound is some sort of warning that may even help me solve the problem.

    Thanks for any help!

Have you tried booting with just the new stick of RAM in? Not your 512 stick as well. If it boots OK then you have 2 sticks of RAM that don't like to play with each other.

  3. Well if with just the new chip alone is causing the chirp it could also mean a bad stick of ram is installed.

    Thanks for your replies, guys.

I tried the new stick of RAM on it's own, it worked fine.

I added another 256 stick, started up expecting there to be an issue, it worked fine.

Added the third one, thinking my luck was about to run out - and it loaded up perfectly fine.

So I don't have a clue, but it's working now.

Thanks for your help, once again.

By keep taking in and out the RAM sticks you probably cleaned the contacts of the RAM slots which is why it now works.

Possibly so. :) Very glad to get it sorted all the same.

    Came at a price though.

Sliding the last bit of RAM down with my thumb left me with two nice deep cuts.

    Quite silly.
