I use Windows Vista 32-bit, AVG AntiVirus Free and Malwarebytes Pro. Malwarebytes scans always indicate no infected objects. AVG scans continuously show AVG Detection Virus Found Win32/Heur and C:\Windows\System32\perdisk.dll and advise that the threat cannot be removed because the original file was deleted and replaced by a malware file. I have received this virus warning for several months now; however, after researching various trusted forums, etc., I accepted that this was a false positive by AVG. However, within the last week or so, ALL of my files have been changed to read only, I am unable to create new folders, password protect .zip files, etc. - even when signed in as admin.

I have read and performed all of the steps in READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide and am uploading my logs. All of the scans seemed to run successfully until I ran MGTools. With MGTools when the scanning gets to processdll.exe to find . . . I get error msg that application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0x7a4 (1956, Thread id=0x38 (3384), and when running from GetLogs.bat get similar msg Process id=0x10b0 (4272) Thread id=0x16fc (5884).

I also ran from command prompt sfc /scannow and received msg that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Please let me know if you would like to review this log as well.

Thank you in advance for your time, knowledge and assistance. I greatly appreciate everyone at Major Geeks!!!!!

    • Your problems may not be due to malware.
    • You have multiple antivirus programs installed. To repair possible damage cause by this, uninstall ALL of the below now and then reboot before moving on:
      • AVG 2013
      • Microsoft Security Essentials
    • Please download and run the correct version of MGtools given in the READ & RUN ME. You are a few years out of date. Attach a new log.

Why would you think that? Your first message stated you were using AVG. :confused

I'm not seeing any major issues in your logs but let's cleanup some misc junk.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run it by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7, or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

To clear your confusion as to my statement about avg, I uninstalled (or thought I had uninstalled avg) after I had read and taken the steps in your "READ ME . . . " forum.

My computer is MUCH faster now; however, I still cannot create new files in Word, from desktop, etc. I changed security on C:\ to full control for all uses (bad idea???) to see if that might help, but it didn't. Any other ideas as to what caused this?

    Latest logs attached. Thanks chaslang!

Many times it is just problems with Windows. There are thousands of complaints on the internet about issues since Vista thru Win 7 where permissions problems occur. And I'm referring to cases having nothing to do with malware. I never saw any real reliable fix for most instances other than reinstall. However try the below.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

    Did this help?

    Hi chaslang,

I took all steps as instructed. During Windows Repair, a message popped up stating Host File blocked by Avira. You stated it was "better not to run anything while the repairs are going on;" however, I did not turn off Malware Bytes or Avira. Should I turn off security and run Windows Repair again as I am still having the same problems - all files still read only, can't create new files, etc. Also, I may have failed to mention previously, but when exiting Word I often get a message stating something about the Template has changed . . . Would this be a cause of any of the troubles I'm having?

As always, I greatly appreciate you, your time, and your expertise!

Disable all protection ( or uninstall if necessary ) and the rerun Windows Repair. Let me know if that works.

I really cannot comment on your problem with Word. I cannot tell if it is just generic to the permissions issue or a problem with word. What I can say is that it is not due to malware. ;)
