    Hi all:
    I have a custom built PC running Vista Ultimate x64, I am unable to get sound to work on this... I had it working on XP. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Here are my specs.

    *Audio Chipset Realtek ALC1200
    *Asus M3N78-Pro Motherboard with the Realtek HD Sound.
    *Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 x64

    Here is what I have tried thus far:

    *Disabled the certificate auth within windows. failed
    *Tried to run pnputil to manually install them. failed
    *download drivers again from website. and ran above steps again. failed

    I have searched the forum and nothing came up for the HD sound. only the AC97

    I am not at home right now, but that looks like the drivers I just downloaded at home from their site. Gave me a certificate error, that it could not install... I tried to post something before with the error code, but it said it needed an admin to approve it, so if an admin can see that, and just grab that message for me that would be awesome. if not... I'll just recreate it when I get home.

    Look for Realtek audio in Control Panel>Programs and Features (or Device Manager) and uninstall it.
    You may also need to uninstall the Realtek HD Audio Controller in Device Manager>System Devices.
    Then try the reinstall.

    Edit: I'll be around, when you get home.

    as of this point I do not even have the Realtek listed in there, there is a generic "HD audio" and my Realtek is listed as something else aswell. with the yellow triangle. I will uninstall both of those.

    The funny part is after I was done installing vista the sound worked, then when I put in my motherboard driver CD shit hit fan so to speak.

    I'll be home at 6pm EST

    I have uninstalled them from both places as mentioned above.
    It was under "Nvidia Drivers" for my add/remove programs.

    Nvidia drivers installed fine when I first started up, now I am getting this error.

    I have also attached the error I am getting when i use the setup tool in the Vista_R201.

    Recently, there was a Windows update of the Realtek HD. Check the Windows update site to see if it gets recommended to you.
    I just had another problem last week that downloaded the update and solved a similar problem.

    Are these all new errors or ones that you already had?
    I'm not familar with the utility you are using but it seems to scan for Plug and Play errors.
    If that is correct, it's possible that this may help:

    Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator
    Scenario One
    You DO
    have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Right-click “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click “Update Driver”
    * Choose “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)” and click Next
    * Choose “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    Scenario Two
    You DON’T have
    "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Go to the Control Panel and run “Add Hardware”
    * When the Add Hardware Wizard appears, click Next
    * Wait for it to search for new hardware
    * Choose Yes, I have already connected the hardware and click Next
    * Scroll all the way down and select “Add a new hardware device”, click Next
    * Choose “Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)”, click Next
    * Select “Show All Devices” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Under Model, select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator”, click Next
    * To start installing the drivers, click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    This problem is stumping me.
    It looks like you are missing (or not loading) a lot of drivers for some reason.
    Have you scanned your PC for malware or recently had an infection?

    Would you attach an Everest report, so that I can see if there is something there that will help?
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
    When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
    Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit

    You might also try running the System File Checker:
    1) Insert your OS disc and close auto-play if it opens.
    (If you have a Recovery Partition you can skip this step.)
    2) Goto Start>Run, type cmd and press Enter.
    A command window will open.
    3) Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.

    This will compare your OS files to the OS files on your OS disc (or Recovery Partition) and repair or replace any missing or corrupt files, without affecting your personal files. (Music, Photos, Apps, etc.)

    Yea, I'll run that now... yea, this is stumping me too... I have no idea whats going on here.... my common error code is "One or more arguments are invalid" and I have all that disabled... I dono. I'll run the scan and upload it shortly.

    This is a fresh copy of Windows on here, nothing else... No other programs are loaded. I work in desktop support and just took a Vista training class provided by Microsoft, and the instructor told me to disable a few things so I did, and it still does not work... he told me to try "pnputil.exe" and to try changing "
    code Signing for device drivers" set to prompt. Needless to say that did not work rolleyes

    I don't believe I didn't suggest this.
    It looks like like your mother board drivers need to be reinstalled.
    Install them and see, if you can get the Realtek driver to install and the errors to disappear.

    So I ran the SFC \scannow. Here are the details.

    C:\Users\Tyler>sfc /scannow

    Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

    Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

    Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired
    them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
    example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

    Ok, go to the ASUS link above, in the top left corner, input your motherboard model M3N78, select drivers in the Catergories, and it will take you to a page where you can select your actual model M3N78-Pro.
    Download the NVIDIA nForce MCP72/78 Chipset Package Driver V18.11 (second driver down)

    It looks like the SFC did a lot of repairs, which is unusual for a new install. I didn't see anything that specifically looked like it would solve your problem, but it did fix a lot of files related to your processor.
    Hopefully, that and the chipset install will enable Realtek to install and stop your errors.

    What kind of things did you disable?
    I know you disabled the certificate authentication. Did you disable any other services?

    By chance did you install SP1?
    I just worked with a problem that turned out to be a bad install of SP1 and it was fixed by uninstalling then reinstalling SP1.

    How did you go about with your OS install? Chipset driver, Audio driver, Video driver, and then finally all other drivers are the best way to go. Then perform all your Windows updates.
    Considering this is a fresh install with no software added, yet, you might consider a reinstall, with a reformat to clean the drive,

  27. tprouty

    tprouty Private E-2

    Here are the steps I was giving to disabled the Code signing.

    "Type “gpedit.msc” in Run
    Go to User Configuration
    Administrative Templates
    System
    Driver Installation
    Code Signing for device drivers
    “Enable” "set to prompt"

    Also running the pnputil.exe was another suggestion by him.

    EDIT ** I also disabled those annoying popups asking for your permission to the run programs :p

    * The disk I have had SP1 on it... downloading SP1 again right now.

    * I installed Vista by inserting the disk and formatting over my XP. Once booted I HAD sound, I then put in the Asus Driver CD that came with my motherboard. And that had all the drivers on it. That was all that was installed on my PC at the start. Now I just have Firefox and few DVD programs.

    * I am not able to update my PC over the net like on XP, its a program within Vista, and it says my PC is up-to-date. I kinda find that hard to believe since Microsoft has an update all the time.

    Something is really messed up on here... I go to install SP1, and it says its already on here, so I go to control panel and look at the "Installed Updates" and it says I have no updates installed on my PC, I dont get whats going on here.

    One question I have is, why were you advised to run the gpedit.msc and the pnputil.exe, instead of just proceding with a normal install?
    I can't run this because I have Home Premium, so I can't really check it out. I would revert it back to it's original state and try your driver installs.
    I did run the pnputil.exe and this command sounds interesting. Have you tried it?
    pnputil.exe -a c:\drivers\*.inf
    or you may need to change the path to:
    c:\windows\system32\driver store\file repository\each individual missing driver folder\*.inf
    I'm not familiar with that utility or that great with DOS syntax.

    Lastly, you may have to start completely over with this install. Don't make any modifications, until you have it fully up and running.

    I have tried to read those Realtek dumps before and can't make heads or tails of them. I did email a tech at Realtek in the past about them and never recieved a reply. :(

    Because within the higher Vistas you are not allowed to install a driver that is not digitally signed by Microsoft or one of their approved vendors. So he said thats how I would get around it.

    No problems, I'll just re-format tonight when I get home. I'll use another Vista disk too just incase. I will also not use my Driver disk as this is what caused the problem in the first place, cause sound worked off a generic driver when Vista first booted. well see, prolly wont hear from me till late again. As it takes for ever. lol

    I've noticed that Vista seems to have updated some of my drivers, at one time or another, during the last year. I don't think it updated my video card and possibly a couple of others.
    What I would do after installing Vista and updating (try going to Windows Updates via IE), is to check Device Manager for any drivers that Vista did not take care of and install only those.

    Also, you might post a new thread about getting Vista to accept non-digatally signed drivers.
    One of the mods here is a MVP and another is just plain smart (and scary) They may have some good ideas for you.

    PS: make sure to reformat during the install.

  33. tprouty

    Yea I'll format that thing tonight..

    I can not get into windows update VIA IE... when I go there, it just opens up the Control Panel version of windows update.

    Well I just finished making a new DVD, I tested it out on a laptop here at work. ( HP 6910p ) and played around with some of the settings, and it looks alot better than what I have setup at home for some reason. It tells me the updates that are installed, and few other things that are missing on my home PC. So I will format with this disk tonight. Crossing my fingers hoping just this DVD alone will solve all my issues.
