recovery capacity

I have a new Dell laptop running Vista. The automatic backup function has been working well until a couple of days ago. The recovery drive (E:) is now full and I can't seem to be able to do anything about it. I always thought that backups only backfilled the new data. This computer acts as if it is saving a new, complete backup each time, thus consuming a lot of capacity. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA
