Redirection Malware Infection

    Attempted to install a program via CNET earlier today. Almost immediately I noticed that my google searches were being redirected, and additionally I would get strange, random popups in my browser. After following your guide for redirection issues, Firefox appears to be clean, as do IE and Opera, but Chrome remains plagued by the issue.

    I believe I followed all the instructions properly. Thank you for your time.

    Windows Searchqu Toolbar <<< Uninstall this.

    If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Your Malware Bytes log shows you "took no action" on those threats. Did you indeed do so AFTER attaching the log for me?

    Re run Hitman Pro and have it delete all of the Potential Unwanted Programs.

    [IMG] Fix items using RogueKiller.

    Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    When it opens, press the Scan button
    Now click the Registry tab and locate these 3 detections:

    • [RUN][SUSP PATH] HKCU\[...]\Run : ContentAgent (C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\ContentAgent.exe [-]) -> FOUND
    • [RUN][SUSP PATH] HKCU\[...]\Run : CashPartners (C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\aHaskZ3\CashPartners.exe [-]) -> FOUND
    • [RUN][SUSP PATH] HKUS\S-1-5-21-1562213815-2583173801-2878056549-1000\[...]\Run : ContentAgent (C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\ContentAgent.exe [-]) -> FOUND
    • [RUN][SUSP PATH] HKUS\S-1-5-21-1562213815-2583173801-2878056549-1000\[...]\Run : CashPartners (C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\aHaskZ3\CashPartners.exe [-]) -> FOUND
    • [RUN][SUSP PATH] HKLM\[...]\Wow6432Node\[...]\Run : keepvid (C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\keepvid.com.exe [-]) -> FOUND
    Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
    When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
    Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O2 - BHO: keepvid.com - {49ed9900-38cd-453c-bba7-3f2613317f5a} - C:\Windows\SysWOW64\keepvid.dll
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [keepvid] C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\keepvid.com.exe
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ContentAgent] C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\ContentAgent.exe
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CashPartners] C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\aHaskZ3\CashPartners.exe

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Download and run OTM.

    Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
    • Paste the following code under the [IMG] area. Do not include the word Code.

    Code:
    :Files
    C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\helper.dat
    C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\keepvid.dll

    C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\log.txt
    C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\ContentAgent.exe
    C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\aHaskZ3
    C:\Users\James Blair\AppData\Local\keepvid.com.exe

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large [IMG] button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

    NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

    You have saved some links to a place where they should not be such as:

    • C:\Windows\SysNative\288932
    • C:\Windows\SysNative\365314

    Did you put them there yourself? :confused

    [IMG] Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Pretty sure I had MalwareBytes delete everything it found; odd that it says no action was taken.

    Uninstallled the Searchqu Toolbar through Add/Remove programs. Should it have only taken a second or two to do so?

    Ran the program for Windows messenger, this error message popped up:
    "Error: could not locate INF file 'C:\Windows\inf\msmsgs.inf'."

    Activated Hitman Pro's free trial license. 38 traces removed, or so it said.

    Ran analyse.exe. Removed the BHO file, but the other three did not even show up at all in its scan.

    Ram OTM. It noted it could not find Keepvid.exe from the programs folder. Thinking back to yesterday, I think I tried to manually delete that file, in my initial panic before consulting you guys.

    I got no idea where the links are from, I can't recall putting them there.

    Got another bloody popup when I was opening my browser up to come back to this site for the next step of the process.

    Ran the junkware removal tool. Seemed to run smoothly, but a quick test search after running it showed... Yep, more redirects.

    Ran MGTools. Still redirects.

    Re run Malware Bytes and attach the log.

    Now I want you to uninstall Google Chrome using Revo Uninstaller. Then reinstall and tell me how things are running.

    Everything /appears/ to be running fine now. Is there any way to make sure of it? I had to use Firefox to even get Revo, because in Chrome, it kept redirecting the very link... It redirected once in Firefox, too, so I just uninstalled that as well. ...Which on second thought probably was inadvisable. My bad. No redirects now, it seems, neither in iE, nor Chrome.

    I think so? Is there any way to check to see if there's anything that still needs to be cleaned up? Should I spend a few minutes searching and websurfing to make sure of it?

    Yes, surf around a while and post back tomorrow.

    So far everything's going well. My netbook had a little oddity just now that made me a bit worried, though; for a few seconds the cursor just pinned itself to the bottom-left corner and seemed to be auto-clicking continuously, which was a big headache. Not sure what was up with that, hoping it was just a software glitch. Being paranoid about whether or not /this/ computer is still clean, is enough of a headache.

    Well here are final steps when you're ready. :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    3. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    4. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    5. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

  11. JamesB92

    Done and done.

    Allowed the Java updater and Adobe Reader updater and Windows update to run and update my stuff. Oddly, I keep getting an error when it tries to update Windows Defender.

    Is there anything else I should do to ensure safety before using this computer again for my online banking/bills, etc?

    Everything seems good to go. You can ask about Windows defender in the sofrware forum. :)

    Splendid! Now to figure out the error with Windows Defender and see how to get over my paranoia about further using this computer, haha.
