   Erases all information from your HDD, not completely erases but makes it think its erased so you can start from scratch. You have to install an O/S after you format.

   It removes all your Data, OS etc etc from the hard drive to a point near as dammit to how a new HD arrives.
   
   what does it acomplish... a few things...
   
   Sets you up for a clean install of an OS
   Clears corrupted data or OS and stubborn virii
   can in some instances clear a bad sector off the HD
