Hi. You guys were kind enough to help me recently when my pc was infected. Now my laptop is having problems.
I've followed all your advice in the "read & run me first" section and done the various scans. When online I'm still getting pop-ups telling me that my registry is infected and I need to visit this site or that to get it cleaned.(Needless to say, I ignore these messages).
Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Empty the below Quarantines!
    CounterSpy Quarantine
    Norton AntiVirus Quarantine

Now run this tool: Kazaa Spyware Removal

Look in Add/Remove programs for the below and uninstall if found:
    Cydoor
    Kazaa
    P2PNetworking

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Anti] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Isass] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMsnW] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Anti] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Isass] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [NvMsnW] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe
    O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete (if found):
    c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\gain publishing <--- the whole folder
    c:\documents and settings\kerry\local settings\temp\bundle.inf
    c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\startup\gstartup.lnk
    c:\program files\MyWay <--- the whole folder
    c:\program files\common files\searchupgrader <--- the whole folder
    c:\program files\kazaa <--- the whole folder
    c:\program files\spyware stormer <--- the whole folder
    c:\windows\system32\adcache <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SBUtils <--- the whole folder
c:\windows\system32\p2p networking <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\Isass.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\cdmxtras <--- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\RESTORE.INS

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST).

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

Also run CounterSpy again and attach a new log.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Thanks for your reply.
I've hit a problem inasmuch as when I try to merge the "fixme.reg" file with the registry an error message tells me that the "specified file is not a registry script". I don't know if I'm doing something stupid, bit I've tried several times with the same result.
    Thanks again

Sorry! That was my fault. Copy the patch again and save it to the file again. I had a fat finger typo and spelled the REGEDIT4 as REDEDIT4

I updated the patch in the previous message.

Thanks again Chas for your help.
My laptop appears to be running now, without all the pop-ups asking me to download a registry cleaner. The only noticeable problems so far, is that it takes an age to boot up.
As you will note, Counterspy is still finding some rogue items.

Is your copy of CounterSpy a paid version or the trial version?
If trial, do you plan on buying it after the 15 day trial ends?

Do you want to have the Kodak & ActiveSurf software automatically downloading updates in the background on you? Or would you rather do it yourself when you want updates. These Backweb things are considered mild adware and do waste system resources.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Something that you will have to do when we finish removing all malware is get all of your Windows Updates. You are seriously out of date and this is a major security risk. Be warned that these updates will be very large since you need major updating. I hope you are not on dialup. Also you need some other software installed. One item is a firewall. We will get to all this later.

As far as the slow startup, that could be due to Norton. How is performance once you startup?

Thanks again for your reply, I've been away from my PC awhile, but am now back in business.

I've merged the fixme.reg as you advised.
I have the trial version of Counterspy, which I don't intend buying.

As far as the Kodak and ActiveSurf updates are concerned, I guess I would be better off downloading them as and when I require them, rather than having them auto download.

Although it takes a while to boot up, everything seems fine once things have got going.
If you feel Norton might be the cause of slow start-up, do you think AVG might be a better option ? I use it on my main PC without any problems.

Okay! Then here are a few additional items you can have HijackThis fix which will help things start a little faster and will save system resources:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ActivSurf] C:\apps\ActivSurf\4448364\Program\backweb-4448364.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - Global Startup: Kodak software updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe
    O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE

If the above does not help get you to startup speed like you are expecting, yes, uninstall Norton and try AVG instead.

    Chas...good news & bad news.
Your tips for improving start-up speed have worked like a dream. The laptop is now booting up up in a third of the time. Thanks.
Unfortunately, I've started getting the same pop-up messages about downloading registry cleaners etc. Bearing in mind that I haven't used the laptop for general surfing (only for trying to get your help) I guess we never really got rid of the stuff in the first place.
Are we back in a situation where I need to scan with the various cleaners etc ?

Your problems are related to the fact that your OS and IE are way out of date and I'm not sure if you have a firewall. Your Norton indicates a firewall monitor service but does it actually have a firewall? I have not idea what that firewall monitor service is supposed to be and it is not documented anywhere (even by Symantec). You need to follow all of the directions in the below too:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

When you complete these steps, attach a new HJT log and tell me how things are working. You must not skip any steps especially step 1.
