Can anyone please advise how to remove the picture backgrounds that XP seems to put in some folders, two examples are a folder or video camera.....

Right click in the folder you wish to remove the background image (e.g like the music icon symbol) and choose Properties > Customize and choose from the drop down list under "what type of folder do you want" All Items ( or Documents ) > Apply

Yes, but it only does it for that specific folder, how can I get it so that XP removes that for all folders?

If its just the picture you want to remove you can do it with a program called Tune Up Utilities 2007, Its commercial but theres a free 30 day trial at the link below. It does loads of other cool stuff to, optomises system and internet settings, clears temp files, lets you change icons, themes, startup screens and loads more. I love it that much i got the full version! Someone on this site reccomended it to me:-

    Hi smurph,

    Go into the program,
    Then goto tuneup system control,
Then on effects tab untick use background image for each folder type.

It does loadsa other cool stuff too, Check out system optimiser, runs your computer and internet quicker!

Excellent, easy when you know how!!
Surely, this task must be achievable in windows?

Probably but I dont have a clue how :( Im not much of an expert myself!

What you think of the program? I got a nicer looking system through that, I got a new theme, startup screen, icons. All my systems tweaked visually. Did you check out optimise? It speeds up your internet connection too.

Anyway glad it worked, makes a change me helping someone than someone helping me!!!

Open a file on your computer (My Music). In the toolbar choose Tools, under Tools choose Folder Options, click View, under that Folder Views-Apply to All Folders, after that there is a prompt to change all folder views on your computer (except for toolbars and folder tasks), choose yes or no. To change a certain folder groups view choose File Types under Folder Options (shows file types registered with Windows), then the folder type you wish to change, I have had unwanted results making changes (the Icons under Advanced) under the File Types tab. I guess I need to do some homework.

I don't see how that changes what i asked for??
I don't have a clue what you are doing with the File Types?!?!
And 'My Music' is a folder, not a file!

Oh yes, thought I said that when I stated "Excellent, easy when you know how!!".thanks for your help.
I'm just loathe to pay for software, when there must be a method to do same in windows.
Also, I'm not interested in changing appearances, but will investigate internet speeds - is this simple?

    Hi smurph,

Heres what to do to tweak your internet connection, and tweak your system to run faster.

    Internet
    >Open tuneup
    >Click on Optomise & Improve
    >Then click on Tune Up System Optimizer
    >Then click on Accelerate Downloads and Internet Surfing
    >Put in your connection speed (eg. mine is Cable Modem - 2mbit)
    >Then when it comes up with things to change, let it change them all

    System
    >Open tuneup
    >Click on Optomise & Improve
    >Then click on Tune Up System Optimizer
    >
Then click on Optimize your Computer Configuration
    >Then theres two options to choose, I dont change Visual Effects as I like mine my own way, thats upto you if you want to change it
    >Click on Use Of The Computer, set it to how you use your pc (eg. mine is Computer with Network or Internet Connection)
    >Then when it comes up with things to change, let it change them all

These wont make a massive difference but they changed my system quite noticably.

Also about once a week I use the 1 click optimize, it cleans your redundant registry entries, temp files etc.

I have messaged you Smurph so check you messages out! ;)
