Remove HD partition in Sony vaio

I recently inherited a Sony VAIO laptop and I happened to notice while attempting to perform some updates that the HD is split into 3 sections with 2partitions as follows.

5.01 GB NTFS EISA configuration Primary partition w/ 1.71 GB free space

C: 13.95 GB NTFS system Primary partition w/ 1.90 GB free space

D: 36.90 GB NTFS Logical drive w/ 36.84 GB free space

Why is the HD split like this when there is nothing in D: drive???

Whoever had the PC before likely formatted the drive as two partitions - the "C" drive containing Windows and software (MS-Office, etc.) and the "D" drive for file storage. By storing files (pictures, music, etc.) on a separate partition, over time you have fewer issues with fragmented files and having to defrag the drive. When you do have to defragment the OS/software partition, you're only spending time doing 13.95GB - not the entire 40GB drive. It also made it easier for the old owner to delete/erase their old files.

If the PC is working OK, stick with the current setup. Just set your "save as" locations for files, documents & music to the "D" drive.

The way I do math, I get more like 60gb :major



I'm a big fan of storage partitions butt, IMO 13.95gb is a bit small for an OS

 

1.71 + 13.95 + 1.9 + 36.90 = 54.46

The System partition still has 1.90 GB free.

If you want to resize, Partition Wizard Home Edition is a very good free tool, but heed the warnings about resizing a system partition.
