Removed 25000 viruses and now a very slow startup...

Fixing a very badly infected machine (worse I've seen, by quantity).

Ran through the standard cleaning for Win XP as described in the forums.

Removed viruses/malware including wowfx.dll, winter.exe, etc. Had to truncate SASlog.txt in order to meet maximum file size limit (original is 2.74 MB).

Now, at startup, after the XP splash screen, a black screen comes up before the login screen. There's an hourglass cursor and the mouse moves. This lasts about 10 minutes. Similar problem in safe mode and at shutdown. I'm guessing either residual viruses and/or operating system file damage.

Just hoping not to have to do a full reformat/install.

    My thanks in advance.

And I'm going with the reformat/install.

    Thanks. :)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Sorry for the delay! We are just extremely busy and there are not enough of us who can help here to keep up with the constant barrage of malware that is flooding the world. If you have not formatted, I have included a fix for you below. If you have already formatted then you should work thru this: How to Protect yourself from malware!

    THE FIX!

Uninstall the below old versions of software as requested in step 1 of the READ ME:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Also uninstall PeoplePC: PeoplePal Toolbar 6.2 which is considered adware.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: PeoplePal Toolbar - {A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085} - c:\program files\peoplepc\toolbar\PPCToolbar.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: PeoplePal Toolbar - {A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085} - c:\program files\peoplepc\toolbar\PPCToolbar.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: __c00F3296 - C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c00F3296.dat (file missing)
    O21 - SSODL: PrxService - {aac46d14-57c1-4917-99bc-b10579350791} - C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{aac46d14-57c1-4917-99bc-b10579350791}\PrxService.dll (file missing)
    O21 - SSODL: SetupAvp - {49d6b91d-9ab6-4828-99cd-dfad79841c3b} - C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{49d6b91d-9ab6-4828-99cd-dfad79841c3b}\SetupAvp.dll (file missing)
    O21 - SSODL: ChkSetup - {129ae955-267d-44c0-98b9-d9792f063bb3} - C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{129ae955-267d-44c0-98b9-d9792f063bb3}\ChkSetup.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now use MSconfig to put your PC into normal startup mode as was requested in step 1 of the READ ME.
Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
