    Hi,
After being struck with the about blank; problem I started reading the basic spyware removal guide on the forum. Upon disabling the system restore I went to disable the RPC helper before performing the adaware and spybot sweeps. All appeared fine until I next went to use my computer.

The startbar was hidden, I cannot access the internet, use a printer, mpeg and wmv files state "error the rpc server is unavailable". I am unable to access properties for system restore or the rpc (when I right click nothing happens)and it wont read sp2 or xp discs to reboot (even in safe mode).

Looking back over it all I suspect this is all due to disabling rpc and not rpc helper as instructed, so I know it is my own fault for not following the instructions correctly.

I am now left wondering if there is anyone out there who might be able to offer me some advice to get me back on track before my computer is thrown out the window along with my sanity!
    Thanks.

Just go back into services and start RPC and set the Startup Type to automatic. Then reboot and see how things are.

I went back into services and set rpc to automatic (2) and rebooted, but things still the same, also rebooted off the xp disc too.

I have noticed an rpc fix zip download, would that be worth trying?

    Any further thoughts appreciated.

I don't know what the rpc fix zip is?

I have used the below a few times before to get people out of this mess:

    - Let's try running msconfig. Click Start, Run, and enter msconfig and hit OK.
Now choose the Services tab. See if you can find Remote Procedure Call (RPC) in there and put a check on it. Then click Apply.

    - If that does not work, check this out: Service Does Not Start and Displays "Error 1058

    - and see this too: Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service. Error 1058

Chaslang, THANK YOU!! The advice worked.
Re; The rpc fix zip, I saw it on the blackviper forum by searching under RPC and automatic.

Okay what threw me was then name you used. Black Viper has a file called RpcRepair.zip

What did you actually do to get it running again?

Are you still having other malware issues that led you to stopping this to begin with?

    Sorry!
Yeah, it was called RPCRepair.zip not RPCfix.zip. It was my failure to acknowledge the importance of exact wordings that got me into my RPC helper/RPC mess in the first place!

The problem was sorted out by following the : "Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service. Error 1058 "advice, however after doing so I was confronted by a blue screen when I started my computer up again, but after rebooting from the xp disc all was OK.

I did try the msconfig route to apply the check to the services but nothing altered and the "Service does not start..." link appered to be dead.

OK! But what about the problems that made you run the cleanup procedures to begin with?

It appears the advice may have done the trick, I have got rid of the about blank browser. However, I now suspect I may still have a few more problems as my internet explorer has been crashing every so often giving me runtime error 230 00904F18. I am not sure if this is due to some nasties still left on my system or some other cause but I should hope I am well protected now after the amount of downloads I used to get rid of the about blank problem. I will run a few sweeps and check my virus software is updated etc and see how things go.

It may be a good idea to check out you HijackThis log.

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT
