    Hello,

    My Windows XP machine was struck with a virus 2 weeks ago. I believe that I have removed the main culprit Rogue malware, but would appreciate if someone could look at my attached logs and be sure that I have! I have used procedures outlined here and on a few other sites to guide my actions.

    Here is a short history:

    1) McAfee Enterprise 'On Access' scan caught a FakeAlert-FAB! and told me it was removed
    2) Five seconds later my computer screen went to BSOD with a 0x7b message
    3) Removed secondary hard drive and BSOD ceased, but no desktop or wallpaper. On START menu, and clicking on Programs, they all showed EMPTY with the links erased.
    4) Windows XP Repair console showed up an hour later!! Lurking somewhere....
    5) Ran SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, unhide and Rkill.Found and removed assorted files associated with FakeAlert-FAB!
    6) got desktop back, added wallpaper, Programs still empty
    7) Using SEARCH, found all links to Programs in a folder called SMTMP, hidden deep inside my harddrive
    8) System ran fine (although slowly) on Primary hard drive, but BSOD when secondary drive was attached.
    9) Ran TDSSKiller and it found and cured Rootkit.Boot.SST.a on the primary drive.

    So, I have now run SAS and MBAM again, ComboFix RootRepeal amd MGtools. It looks fine to me but when I looked at the registry using regedit (looked, changed nothing!), there appear to be some items that are suggested to be part of the FakeAlert-FAB! rogue still there. I am just not sure how they would effect my machine or how to get rid of items that should be deleted.

    Here are registry entries and files that have been associated with this rogue:

    I have attached all recommended logs, plus the TDSSKiller log.

    Sorry, but I am quite paranoid at this point after 2 weeks of this!!!

    Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,

    Please Disable Spybot's TeaTimer --> Should have been done as per the R&R instructions!

    * Run Spybot and click Mode
    * Select Advanced Mode.
    * Then click Tools and select Resident.
    * Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    * Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    * and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    * Now quit Spybot!

    You can restore the defaults for the Start Menu, Accessories and Administrative Tools as follows:

    Do not run any temp cleaning program until we are sure your files and folders are back.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    6435CBF6

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\mitch\Application Data\fin.zup
    c:\windows\system32\6435CBF6.exe

    RegLock::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{696DB1E5-3130-B1C6-A949-4FC4060A9887}\InProcServer32*]
    "kaagdmlapnkokfcfbgjfop"=hex:62,61,61,6c,00,00
    "jaagkidplijaglkjfefn"=hex:63,61,62,6c,66,68,00,61
    "iaagmlbjfnncmhcbop"=hex:69,61,6f,6b,69,68,6f,61,62,64,6e,66,6a,67,6f,6d,66,6d,
       00,00
    "kaaghmgdjjekpibapmmmak"=hex:63,61,65,6c,6c,69,00,61

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_18

    Let your Java Updater update your Java.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thank you so much for responding so quickly! You guys are AMAZING!

    OK so followed your instructions. I thought I had turned off the Tea Timer, but I must have missed it. Done now.

    Downloaded and ran the Accessories restore. I likely did not explain myself properly, but it is most of the Programs listed in the Start menu that are empty. Is this found in the Start menu of ALL USERS or of mitch? If I know that I can copy the ones I have found in the SMTMP folder I saved.

    Ran the ComboFix script and the log is attached.

    Removed the Java files listed and then ran the updater.

    Finally I ran GetLogs.bat from MGtools.

    I have also sent you a file in one of 3 sub-folders in the SMTMP folder I saved. The sub-folders are numbered 1, 2 and 4. This file is in 4. Not sure if this helps/makes any sense, but here it is!

    All are attached for your assessment.

    Can't thank you enough, makes me feel that a set of knowledgeable eyes are helping me out and I am not battling alone (and ignorant!!!)

    Only one item is still showing in your logs, so use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\mitch\Application Data\fin.zup

    If everything is back as it should be, then you are good to go.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
