Removing CyberDefender Internet Security

Hello. I have gone thru the entire structured cleanup process, and have fairly good, but not complete results.

Scenario - friends PC, they got (for the 2nd time) CyberSecurity and TotalSecurity malware. I went thru the entire process, and the PC appears to be clean now (I am no longer getting pop-ups when browsing with IE). I have set up AVG, Firefox and Spybot for them in the hopes they will help these poor souls from a repeat performance.

The one issue I am seeing is that there seem to be vestiges of CyberDefender Internet Security. When starting up ComboFix.exe, it definitely still detects it no matter what I try. This doesn't appear in the Add/Remove programs, there is no folder for it under c:\Program Files\, or anything else I can find. I have even used registry cleaners and manually went thru the registry.

I have found battling accounts as to whether this program is good or not, and frankly, I don't care one way or the other. It's supposed to be off the PC, and I want it all the way off, so as to not conflict with AVG. So, I need assistance in finishing the removal, or else I fear the PC owner may not be getting all the protection they need.

All logs attached in this and the next post. Thanks for the help.

    Let's remove some more remnants.

I would just like to mention to you that CyberDefender is not the same thing as CyberSecurity. CyberDefender is a valid program which we used to have available for download until the website crash. It was missed when restoring things.

    1. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    2.
Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scanner

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\TS
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\ofiiioio0s00f9.lnk
    C:\CybDefInstallInfo.log
    C:\WINDOWS\as_affiliate.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\av_affiliate.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\st_affiliate.ini

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{3C060EA2-E6A9-4E49-A530-D4657B8C449A}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    3. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix

    4. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

Logs attached. Things are running fine, but CyberDefender stuff is still somewhere in the PC.

I took some steps outside your instructions, some of which is reflected in the log files. Let me explain:

I first ran the MGtools version of HJT, per instructions. ComboFix was still detecting AVG and CyberDefender, even after I killed all the AVG services. I decided to uninstall AVG until this process was complete. I was having an issue with the uninstall process, so needed to install the reset_access application from AVG. AVG is currently uninstalled.

I also uninstalled malwarebytes and superantispyware, so I knew those processes would not be running. I manually shut off AdAware in the Services console.

I manually uninstalled the Weather Channel toolbar, the Google toolbar, and the Yahoo toolbar.

I then re-ran combofix using the startup script, per instructions. I snagged the logs and attached them.

FYI, I rebooted, and ran combofix again, looking for the warning about AV's running, and it still detects CyberDefender. There does not appear to be any issues with malware at this point, however.

Question - would actually installing CyberDefender, then using their uninstall tool aid this process?

    Thanks for the help.

Got it, it did take a reinstall/uninstall of CyberDefender to remove it. I believe the vestiges hanging on were related to the mechanism Windows uses to know if there is an AV program working, because after the new uninstall and a reboot, I started getting the Windows warnings about "your PC may be unprotected" with the red shield, yadda yadda.

Hope this helps anyone else out there, and thanks to Kestrel13! for their help.

You shouldn't run combofix on your own without having instructions to do so.

I am glad that the reinstall and uninstall worked for you ;)

    Let's do the below now:

If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now use Windows Explorer to find and delete the below bold empty directory:

    c:\program files\Common Files\Scanner

Now let's run the avg removal tool to be sure all traces of that are gone.

Make sure you also delete any AVG folders in Program Files and Documents & Settings/Application Data directories that could be left behind.

Now use Windows Explorer to find and delete the below bold folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\TS

Get yourself kitted out with whatever anti virus you choose to put on the machine and you're done. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
