Repeated iexplore.exe & explore.exe errors

I hope someone might be able to help me on this. I have a Dell desktop with a P3 chip running W2k Pro. It has been very stable until recently where I have a number of "odd" errors messages, specifically:

A window asking to restart Internet Explorer because of an error that occurs when I close IE after using it...I am using Version 6.0.2800.1106.

Repeated Program Error window that states "explore.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created." [This occurs when I close desktop folders or use Explore, etc.)

Lastly, my desktop icons have arranged themselves like Auto Arrange although I haven't directed that to occur

I have McAfee AV running and I use SpyBot, Ad-Aware, and Spyware Blaster on this system so I don't think this is Spyware related.

I have tried to repair, then revert to a previous version of Internet Explorer without any success.

Any ideas or suggestions on what error logs I need to post to help troubleshoot this irritating problem would be appreciated. I am at my wits end and my kids want me to fix the machine

I appreciate the reply but I have already followed these procedures without success. Does anyone else have any potential ideas?
