replacing my hard drive

hello,
haven't posted here in a while , but I need some advice. yeah, I know, only come around when I need help. i'm replacing a hard drive with bad sectors. it's still working but seems to be slowly going down hill. my main question is what is the best way to clone / copy my operating system and move it to the new drive. any and all advice will be most appreciated. below is the latest info I have for this computer.

That is i'm sorry to say a very long uninformative post (specs wise) :confused

I did manage to pick out this information though:

I wouldn't recommend cloning a drive with bad sectors incase the bad sector is something that'd corrupt if it was recovered. I found an article that talks about it. Before you rush to download CloneZilla, how do you know it has bad sectors?

Have you got a backup hard drive you can use? If so you can backup your files (pics, video's etc), drivers (GPU, Mobo, audio ect) & any utilities you use (Antivirus, Firewall, Steam, CCleaner etc) & reinstall windows on the new drive. I've done it two weeks running & with the install times of Windows 7 it take no time to get a new environment up & ready for personalisation I would recommend you use Ninite to grab a few essential programs for you to speed it up even more.

sorry about all that useless info, I didn't realize it was all that. how do I know I have bad sectors? it would not boot up and at the time I could 'nt stop and figure it out myself, so I took it to a local shop and the guy got it up and going but informed me that the hard drive had bad clusters and would need replacing sooner or later. I have used this shop several times and have no reason to doubt him. I just didn't have 175$ bucks at the time. I like to DIY if I have time and I was trying to get my ducks in a row. one of the problems i'm having is down loading any programs to work with. windows security won't let anything through, not even their own up-dates. not sure if this is related to the drive problem. would turn it off but I can't find that option . thanks

 

That's ok I managed to get enough info for now The software can only tell you so much. Was it a pre-build system like a Dell? Did you get any disks with it? How old is it?

There's two different types of bad sectors:

Physical: The drive had been dropped, some dust got into it, the reader touched the disk etc. Basically these are irretrievably damaged.

Logical: A cluster of data that's not responding to the operating system, that's when the OS tries to read data on the hard drive from the bad sector and found that the error-correcting code (ECC) didn’t match the contents of the sector, which suggests that something is wrong. These can actually be fixed by overwriting the drive with zero's.

The best thing to do now is to run chkdsk to see if you have bad sectors, then if you're lucky they'll be logical & if not you'll need a new drive.

Does it boot at the moment? If not how far do you get? You may be able to get into Safe Mode to run chkdsk.

Is it the security or the firewall?

To turn off security Center:

1. Click Start, type Run and type services.msc.
2. In the services window that pops up look for Security Center in the right pane.
3. Set the startup type to "disabled."
4. Click the OK button.

For the Firewall:

1. Click start, control panel, Security, Windows Firewall.
2. Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. If it asks for the admin password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Click Off (not recommended), then OK.

Have you got your own antivirus/firewall? *If not you disable your security at your own risk.* It'd probably be best to disconnect your internet either through software (WiFi) or physically taking out the cable while you do this.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves, that's a last resort if you have logical bad sectors. Once we have some more info we can move onto sorting it out for you

I built this computer in 2010. used asus mother board and cpu. I have the windows 7 installation disk. it starts and runs fine for the most part. I ran chkdsk but I didn't see where it mentioned any bad sectors but i'm not sure. I did disable the fire wall and it's still no-go on any downloads. right now I only use Microsoft security essentials because it seems to do a really good job. in the past I have used awg? I haven't tried turning off Microsoft yet. i'll tell you something that probably hasn't helped matters at all, I haven't cleaned the inside of the computer since I built it. we use wood heat so it was really dirty. I have cleaned it since my original problem.

 

If you don't see Bad Clusters/Sectors listed, then CHKDSK is telling you, "Everything's fine."

Of course, what's actually being noted is "No NEW bad sectors". Typically, I see HDD failures within the first 20-30 hours of usage, or else not for years and years (except for those I've dropkicked, shot, hammered, etc. Y'know, just the typical ol' rants...).

Thursday and Friday, I've gone thru a stack of 12-13 year old IDE drives (6Gb!! 10Gb!!) and 18 of those 20 powered up. The two no-power units had been labeled as "iffy" five years ago, so fine, their mechanics or power-grid finally gave up. "What's the world record for fewest number of ax strokes to cleave a hard drive?"

I judge HDDs not on a separate episode of a few bad sectors but on the continual designation of bad sectors. I think this is what you'd alluded to in the Big Opening Post. I am a big fan of wiping out HDDs and re-loading everything, by the way. A PC is never quicker or more efficient than when it's newly-loaded.

As for your Dirty Environment, well... we service print-shops with fine mists of paper-dust. I've had PCs that had more layers inside than wedding cakes! Too bad it's not gold dust...

Wood chopping?!! I wish I'd have mailed you my two dead HDDs so you might have tried out for that World Record HDD Cleaving!

 

I would recommend buying a couple of HDD's, a main drive & a bigger backup drive. I have used 2 drives for years, call it paranoia but I've never lost any data

Install windows on the main HDD, keep your music, pictures, videos etc on the backup. If you need any help installing Windows, finding utilities, antivirus software etc we can help

I've also run sfc/scannow and it showed corrupted files that were not repairable. i'll probably go ahead and replace the drive and quit worrying about it. if nothing else i'll have a clean new drive. thanks

 

If you have things on that drive you don't want loose you can get a couple of HDD's (e.g a 500GB primary & 1TB backup) backup what's not corrupt & not loose it.

Can you download files atm? If so you could get all the drivers, AV, cleaners & utilities you use ready as soon as your OS is installed. Also you can circumvent Internet Explorer entirely with this. Just pick the programs you want & download the file. When you have Windows reinstalled just run it, it'll download & install the programs for you :cool
