So after a few weeks of heavy clicking and whirring my notebook hard-disk has finally died and I need to replace it. I am a relative hardware novice however and don't know which hard disks will be compatible with my system. The current hard drive is only 10GB so I would like to get a bigger one. How big can I go and can I just buy a drive from any manufacturer? (assuming it fits the 2.5" size requirement).
    My notebook specs are:

    Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D 5500 (CY 23)
    Intel Celeron 994 Mhz
    256MB Ram
    Hard Disk: IBM Travelstar (10GB)
    Windows XP Pro

Any thoughts would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks, Alex.

Base on your specs I think under 40G .
BTW, you should look for fujitsu help.

Check with the laptop manufacturer (either website or manual) to see what is the maximum capacity hard drive your BIOS will support. I think you will be OK up to 30gigs but check anyhow. I have 3 x 2.5" IBM Travelstars for my Gateway laptop. 2 x 10gigs and 1 x 30 gig. My laptop will take a permanent hard drive (30gig), and has a removable sled where I can use either of the 2 x 10 gig drives. It might be an idea to contact the BIOS manufacturer, as well, for a second opinion. BIOS manufacturer info can be read when laptop boots up and is checking RAM, at startup. Bazza
