I was using Knoppix QTParted to try and resize my windows partition,as per the instructions, but when I do I get a message saying "The software has detected that the disk has at least 3 bad sectors".confused

What does that mean? Is there something wrong my hd?

Hmmm, on NTFS? I'm not sure knoppix can resize an NTFS partition.

You could try ntfsfix from the command line.

    At your own risk, though.

I don't mind taking chances. I have the important stuff back up. I will give it a shot.

I tried ntfsfix in knoppix but I just got a bunch of errors. I ran chkdsk, but I am still not sure what the problem is.

This seems to be more of a hardware issue. Mods, could you move this thread please?

    Thanks, Ad...

So "bad sectors" seems to be a bad problem. Anyone know of another program that can attempt to fix these besides chkdsk? Can they be fixed at all?

Thanks blades, but I don't have norton. I used HDD Regenerator and it said it fixed them. I ran it three times to get each bad sector.

Chkdsk says the bad sectors are still there and I still can't partition the driveconfused
I don't know what else to do. Maybe it is just beyond repair:cry

BTW: I was talking to HP last night and they suggested I buy a new hd for the great price of $650.:mad I couldn't even get that much if I sold this computer in tip top shape. If I wanted to spend that much I could just get another laptop.

Laptop hard drives certainly dont cost that much and sometimes its a nice performance upgrade, going from 4200rpm to 7200rpm :)

It would be nice. I don't even need an 80 gig hd as I'm only using six right now. I haven't done any shopping yet, but I am not going to pay anywhere near 650.

A guy called Steve Gibson wrote a fantastic dos based program called SpinRite which can recover bad sectors and claims to repair aging drives I wont post the link cos I dont want to break any rules but his research is legendary and Im sure many on here have heard his name. Worth a shot and much cheaper than buying a new drive.

You can use the command line tool ntfsresize with the --bad-sectors option. It should then resize the partition even with bad sectors still there. It should be included on the knoppix cd.

    ntfsresize manual

You can also try a commercial partitioning tool, like Disk Director.

$650 is probably pretty cheap for a solid gold hard drive, wouldn't actually work of course, but it would be real purdy rolleyes

Okay, I got it resized with ntfsresize, thank you erikske.
I am installing Ubuntu right now, we will see how it goes.
