Retrieving data from website using C program

    Hi, I want to write a program which will go to a URL, get some data and write it to a database. Are there C (++) libraries available with functions to do internet tasks like this ? Can you recommend a database system to use which has a good interface to review data as well as C (++) functions to manipulate data ? Is open source to much to ask ? Thanks for your help
