Ripping VOB files from CD and converting to AVI/MPEG4

I made a super video CD (SVCD) that contains 3 files each of VOB, BUP,
and IFO format. It is 10 minutes long. I would like to convert it
into a usable format to upload it to Google Videos. Would this need to be AVI and/or MPEG-4 files?

I have tried using the Handbrake 0.9.2 software to do this, but I don't know what I'm doing, and the file gets labeled as "filedump."

Can someone please walk me through how to properly use
Handbrake 0.9.2 or make another suggestion of a program that's easier to use?

I'm a fan of AutoGk, as well. :)

I have done some searching, and it seems that all the guides for Handbrake are written for Mac usage, not Windows. Handbrake was originally for Mac only, then it got ported to Linux and Windows. I'm not sure if using the Mac guides would be helpful or not; you'd think the program would be more-or-less the same on either platform... I haven't personally used Handbrake, but I know folks that have used it (on Windows) to rip movies to hi-quality .mp4 files. As suggested, try AutoGK. It's pretty easy to use. It will convert to AVI using the XVid or DivX codec; you can also try Dr. Divx which will convert to .divx files (it's basically an AVI with a .divx extension).

Catalencoder http://www.majorgeeks.com/Catalencoder_d5397.html (I hear this is easy to use)

Compress 18G .avi file using VirtualDub Mod

    dlb,

Thank you for your replies. I have downloaded VirtualDub Mod. Are you familiar enough with this program to walk me through each step of compressing my huge 18G file into something of a reasonable size? I'd like help configuring the compression so that I don't mess up the video or audio of my movie. If you think I should use AutoGK instead, let me know. Thanks!

First thing to do is to make a 2nd copy of the file(s) that you'll leave untouched just in case something goes wrong, that way you'll have a clean copy. Put it on an external drive if possible. I don't understand how a 10 minute clip ended up being 18gb. I know when certain VDub settings aren't set just 'so' that the resulting file can be pretty big (like from 700mb to 8gb or 10gb), but a 10 minute clip at 18gb? Anyway- VDub is not the most user friendly program; it works great, and it's fast, but it has a learning curve that is a bit steep for most people. Here's a guide for Virtual Dub, it's a bit old, but it should still be pretty close to the current version: http://www.videohelp.com/oldguides/avi2divx All kinds of other help and guides can be found at that site, and at www.afterdawn.com If you're looking for something much easier to use, AutoGK is the way to go, or Dr. Divx which is super easy. I have provided links above to Dr. Divx and Catalencoder (which is supposed to be easy to use). Both AutoGK and Dr.Divx allow you to set custom files sizes for the output file(s) which can be very handy. I have located several how-to guides for AutoGK; the links are below. I couldn't find any guides for Catalencoder in English (they're all in French), and you shouldn't need a guide for Dr.Divx, but if you want to learn a bit about it, it has built-in help which should be sufficient, or you can visit their web site. Their FAQ page is here http://labs.divx.com/node/12 and the user guide is here http://labs.divx.com/DrDivXUserGuide Several of the AutoGK guides have steps for ripping the DVD first. This is primarily for people that need to back up their home DVD collections and probably isn't something you need to deal with from the sound of it, so you can simply skip the steps concerning ripping the DVD and go straight to the AutoGK conversion steps:

I hope this helps! Good luck!

(I linked several guides 'cuz one may be easier for you to follow than another ;) )
(sorry for the 'much-longer-than-it-probably-needed-to-be' post. I kept thinking of new stuff to add to it, and I've been drinking WAY too much coffee today :hyper :D)
