I was infected by rootkit bagle and I managed to remove it with Findykill. Malwarebytes doesn't find any traces of it now (with a complete scan). I installed Antivir and it doesn't find anything either.

When I try to find it again with Findykill, here is the log:

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid addtional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advise that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky Don't Bump! It Only Hurts You!!!. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Thank you for your help!

I have an extra concern now. I can't manage to go back to selective startup (since I switched it to Normal setup to do the cleaning of malwares; as indicated in http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139309 ).

Windows wants to install updates, but I don't want to install anything while I'm in normal startup mode. When I choose selective startup, it asks me if I want to reboot. Whether I click yes there or turn off the computer without installing the updates, the changes don't apply and I'm still in normal startup once I have rebooted. Any idea how I can fix that?!

    Thanks,

(PS: I don't know if that would help, but I noticed that when I start Firefox after trying to change the startup, it always asks me whether I want to set it as the default browser mode and it doesn't go back to the previous session as it usually does.)

You are welcome, I will get back to you about your logs very soon.

You should not be in selective start up! I made the mistake of doing this myself in the past. It is NOT a wise way to control what applications start or not. It is for diagnostics and troubleshooting purposes. You would be better off advised using software such as Startup CPL 2.8 for much better process management than by using MSCONFIG.

I'll post a set of instructions for you very soon.

You should be in normal start up mode always unless there is a problem, and you are trying to drill down to find the cause...disabling things one at a time---troubleshooting etc... our procedures do not state that you should be in selective start-up during or after what we've done here in malware removal. Staying in selective start up will actually delay us helping someone because we require the machine to be in normal mode before we continue...

  11. Hopeless88

Ok. I'll stay in normal startup mode then. Thanks.

    1) Ad-Aware SE Personal is not as effective as Malware Bytes or SUPERantispyware, I would suggest that you uninstall it, as well as the below older version of Java:

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 11
    2) Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    3) Now we need to use ComboFix

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it
(make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    Drivers::
    iktgfkjt
    Aswnuodeftet

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\ffmlr.sys
    G:\Autorun.exe

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{2434ca73-8c9b-11dc-a838-0016d3064fd9}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{2a020074-b0d4-11dd-aa95-0016d3064fd9}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{355fc7a8-88a8-11dc-a824-0016d3064fd9}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4) Reboot your machine now and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    5) Now Run Ccleaner!

    6) Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    7) Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

Okay: Norton got in the way of the fix because it was not completely shutdown. I Suggest that you re-run the fix in safe boot mode and to make sure Norton is completely disabled.

    Thanks

    The combofix procedure?

How can I make sure Norton is completely disabled?

    NORTON ANTIVIRUS (by Symantec)

Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a sign.

    • right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
    • select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
    • click "Ok."
    • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this:

This should have successfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard. Don't forget to be in safe mode to re run the fix again.

I see this from your Combofix log.

and this is further indicative that it didn't run correctly.

Either way something got in the way of the fix. Try running it again in safe mode and let's see what happens

I have tried twice to boot in safe mode and after i've logged on as an administrator and wait for a few seconds without doing anything, my computer just shuts down!

Is there any risk in trying again? Any idea why it would do that?

    3) Now we need to re run the script, however I would like to highlight the fact that I don't want you to run the previous script, let's make a fresh one and use that.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

I'm still concerned by the fact that I can't boot in safe mode ... one I have logged in and clicked yes to accept safe mode, the system is still loading when it shuts down on its own! I tried twice again today, and it even shut down when I tried to boot normally ... ! :confused

Do the logs show anything suspicious? Could it still be the result of the rootkit?!

I believe this is not topic for the malware forum and that you may have to resolve the remaining issues that you have in the software forum.

Your logs are clean, however run one of the below and attach the log it generates:

    Running GMER to detect rootkits

    Using Sophos Anti-Rootkit

OK one of my commands were wrong.

We need to use ComboFix again. Please download the latest version from the R & R.

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

I followed the procedure. Here are my logs again.

Do you have any idea what ffmlr.sys could have had done?

    Thanks

I'm glad my computer is clean now! Thanks a lot for your help through this rather long process.

(Do you have any idea what ffmlr.sys could have had done?)

    Thanks again,

I do not know.... sometimes these infections show up before anyone can classify them.
