Router rejects encrypted transmissions

My Dell computer with a Network Everywhere (Linksys) NR041 wired router does not allow certain web transmissions, including Windows Upgrades or other "encrypted" transmissions, if that is the term. Recently, my DSL provider has changed there e-mail format, and now, although I can get into my inbox I cannot retrieve messages.

However, if I bypass the router, all of the above become available, no problem.

I've tried unsuccessfully to upgrade the NR041 firmware.

I've seen references to changing the "MTU" to resolve this problem, but don't have a clue about how to go about it.

According to the router's support personnel, the router is no longer eligible for support without a charge (probably more than a new router).

Any suggestions would be appreciated. (Computer information listed below)

    Thanks,

    Speculant,

    Thanks for your response.

This issue has been resolved without having to resort to a new modem. Turns out the Westell DSLmodem is itself a router, and needed to be set to bridge mode to properly work with the Network Everywhere NR041 router, which had to be configured to PPoE. This link has clear procedures for such connections: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6096

In retrospect, I should have posted this thread in the Networking forum. Perhaps the moderator will want to move it there. Anyone else having problems linking a Westell modem and any number of routers might benefit from my experience.

Finally, honesty compels me to disclose that the solution came from JohnWill at another support site, techguy.org
