    Win XP sp3, 3gb ram.

    Symptoms:
Issue 1: After logging into the pc, explorer takes about 5 minutes to load. I tried killing it and relaunching it via taskmgr and it still didn't help. Once explorer does launch, you can click on start menu, but then it freezes again.

Issue 2: When trying to execute programs such as Word, nothing happens. Taskmgr doesn't show winword. Right click open Word will give error, "Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safemode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed." I tried reregistering it as well as reinstalling per microsoft, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346#method2, but either didnt work.

Accessing control panel and such is very slow as well, but is very responsive in safemode. I ran all the scanners in safe mode, attached. I also tried disabling services that i didn't recognize but that didn't help.

FYI, taskmgr is very quick to launch and is responsive. I can run cmd and copy files that i needed temporarily.

Please assist if you can. Thanks

Please run CCleaner and clean out your temp folder.

Your MBR may be infected. Please download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.
You can read the below to help you do this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

Then boot back into normal mode.

Now re-run MBRCheck and attach the new log.

    Here's the new log.

Just tried rebooting into normal mode and same issue. Logged in and only get wall paper, no start menu until maybe 5-10 minutes later. And with the start menu, not loads since its very slow all around. CPU usage is 0%, explorer.exe is running as well.

I also tried to rebuild the boot.ini, that didnt work. I was able to go under normal mode and ran msconfig and changed bootup from selective to diagnostic startup. After reboot, i can not click on start and do anything i want except launch programs via shortcuts from the desktop. However going into program files, i am able to launch the programs from there. I tried deleting the desktop shortcut and readd but still the same issue. I think i am still infected.

Your MBR is fixed. However, is there an OS on your other hard drive?

I was not seeing any malware, however, let's check with Combo:

Please download ComboFix to your desktop. Turn off any AV software you have before you run it. Attach the log when finished. Do not do anything while it is running or it may stall the program.

Attached is the combofix log. The 2nd hard drive is a backup with no OS installed, just has a backup i created months ago, *.bkf.

    Thanks again for your help.

That log is clean. I suggest that you post in the software forum for any remaining issues.

Since you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

Thank you for your help. How did you know it was the MBR?

The RogueKiller log indicated an unknown MBR. And you are most welcome.
