    Greetings
I can usually clear these things myself but this one has be stumped. There is definately a problem somewhere:

    The symptoms:
Norton Antivirus began to not work properly. Auto protect mode was turned off and showed "error". Norton will now not load and run at startup. If run manaully, sometimes will not run, if runs then shows as Auto Protect "error" and not working.
IE browser wont open the first time or second time, usually thrid time, but is slow despite house cleaning and am often getting misdirects and a popup alert saying 'error on computer, free scan to fix' and that sort of thing.
Also now, the network printer attached to this machine is always offline and when put back online cannot print.

    Remedies:
I had run several scans, removed various things, to no avail then finally found and followed the step by step procedure on the website.

    Done so far:
In safe mode have run Ccleaner
have run Spybot S&D which found nothing to fix
Have run counterspy - log file attached
Have run bitdefender - log file attached
have run panda active scan - log file attached

more files and continues on next post

    part 2 continues...

then in normal mode, I have run:
    getrunkey.bat - log file attached
    shownew.bat - log file attached

    and then finally have run
Hijack this - log file attached

after following the download and renaming procedure outlined on the website

and from there I'm stuck, at a loss, and contemplating suicide. Hoping you can help. Thanks for running this great website btw, we'd be lost without you guys

    regards

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You appear to be missing some startup items for Symantec. I will try to add some that I notice back in via a registry patch but if this does not work, you may need to wait until we remove all malware and then uninstall, cleanup, and then reinstall Symantec.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04
Viewpoint Media Player (Remove Only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Also uninstall the CounterSpy trial now since we are finished with it.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0429A612-A1E7-47E7-B24B-F1B4B5789A9F} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\d3dx9_25j.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FA878F88-CDE3-4A55-BE10-4689CD776F3E} - c:\windows\system32\dispexf.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: gzpcxmyn - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dispexf.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Some of the items you had were loading as drivers/services and we may need to use some other special steps if the above does not work.

Hi there and thatnks for the help.
The steps went along all right, but I noticed that avenger could not clean most of the files and that the items removed from the hijack this scan come back.

Logs are attached, 3 this post one on the next

Yes I did say that they might at the end of my previous instructions.

I want to use a new form of getting logs for GetRunKey and ShowNew. This new process also automatically gives me a few other useful logs and it also gets a HijackThis log too. And to make it easier, it puts all of these logs into a single ZIP file named C:\MGGlogs.zip To this end please follow the below steps.

    Download this file - combofix.exe
    1. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    2. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then run this procedure Using MGtools and attach the C:\MGlogs.zip

Note: You should be attach two files after doing the above.
    1. C:\ComboFix.txt
    2. C:\MGlogs.zip
We will more than likely be using ComboFix in my next procedure to attempt removal of these drivers that are loading.

okay, here we go and I think, we are making progress because combofix ran fine. I had heard about this program and tried it earlier but it wouldn't run, yet this time I downloaded the link you gave, installed and ran that and it ran just fine, so we are getting somewhere.
I was getting messages suddenly from AVG antispyware saying that it had detected a trojan in one of the suspect files everytime I tried to open a browser - this just started yesterday after AVg updated definitions - but it has stopped doing that now it seems. Progress.

Anyway enough of my prattle - here are the latest logs (put 'em on the yule fire)
thanks again for your help, amigo! Thou art a great person and a wonderful human being.

Okay we are getting there. Now let's repeat part of a previous fix to see if we can remove some files that would not go away previously.

First back in message # 3, I asked you to uninstall the CounterSpy trial but I still see it installed. Please uninstall it now before continuing.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe"

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

After reboot, check to see if any of the above files still exist. If they do, try deleting them yourself and let me know what happens.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Found a few missing directories from counterspy and have removed them. Missed them first time around.

    Ran Ccleaner

    Ran avneger

Okay, well... NOW things are working much better! IE browser opens first time now, although the default site had been reset to msn, I chaged it back to my preferred blank option.
Avenger removed all the files indicated, yay!

Machine is running much faster, without popup warning labels or IE misdirects.

Norton AV still doesnt open up properly or load on boot, and has the autoprotect still "error", but as you said it may need to be removed and reloaded. I have the official norton removal program and have done this once before, way back when all the trouble started.

your help has been brilliant! Thanks again.

    Logs attached as requested.

    You're welcome.

No! You still need to uninstall it and that is what you should have done first. It is still in Add/Remove programs and proceseses and services for it are still trying to load at startup. See them in your HJT log. They look like this:
    Uninstall CounterSpy now.

    Let's try the below again.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this

Okay, I finally seem to have gotten counterspy uninstalled... funny that before I wasnt getting the uninstall icon in ad/remove progams but then, weird things have been happening, so it's like if Batman is a transvestite... who knows?

have added the fixme merge into the registry but alas, norton still wont open properly or load on boot. It could be that "Hes' dead...Jim." and need a reinstall.

I was getting the repeat of the instance of IE explorer not opening on the first time again, but not all the time and otherwise, the systems seems okay.

new zip log attached for your perusal.

Again, I owe you a debt of gratitude. As a form of repatriation, I am naming my first born male child after you... except he's 23 and sort of pissed about the idea... oh well. :D

Yes that sounds like the best thing to do now.

    Looks good.

LOL! Tell him it will open doors for him and also offer a bribe. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps (but I would first take care of your Norton reinstall):
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
