Turned computer on this morning and have Blue screen with Black box in middle "Your computer is infected" had lots of pop ups everywhere. Ran spybot and AVG and spybot picked up MicrosoftWindowsSecurityCenter.TaskManager and FraudVirusResponseLab2009. Let spy bot fix then ran again and they appeared again removed but decided to do scan in safe mode and they appeared again so let spybot remove again. Also while in safe mode removed bogus malware folder from program files (Advanced Virus Remover Pavrm). Restarted and ran spybot again and all clear but still have blue screen with warning and cannot change as desktop properties are locked ??? IE not working but Firefox is. Running XP home edition. Please help:(

    Welcome to MajorGeeks!

The definition databases for both MBAM & SAS are outdated according to your logs.

    * Run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database. Now run a new Quick Scan of your system.

    * Run MBAM and click the Update tab > then the Check for Updates button. Run a new Quick Scan.

And attach these new logs to your next reply.
    • SASlog.txt
    • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Hi Dr M
I could not update these programs at the time even went to the website and tried to do manually so decided to run anyway but have now managed to update with latest definitions and have run full scans and have attached logs as per your instructions. Avg has located TribalFusion but seems unable to remove when requested to but this was not found on the attached logs.
    Many thanks for your help

    Hello, JeanetteNZ

The below fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for issue(s) on this machine. Also, please do not install any other software while we are still working with you unless instructed. Once we have given you the all clean and final instructions you will be free to install what you want.

I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only links... C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop ...Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

    Step 1:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 2:
Now we need to use ComboFix to remove some malware.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      [IMG]
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 3:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 4:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 5:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • C:\combofix.txt

Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure and give a description of how things are working now!

    Hi Dr M
I have followed your instructions to the letter. The only thing that appeared different to your instructions was running combo fix when I dragged the CFscript file onto ComboFix.exe there were no prompts...it just opened up and ran through. I have attached the logs.

Have tested computer for a few days and it appears to be running "like a well oiled machine".

Many thanks for your expert assistance. This is the first serious malware that has infected my machine ever and cant understand how it happened but presume my teenage daughter opened, or downloaded something (although she is extremely aware of doing this).

Do you think this is the end of my problems???

    Hi, JeanetteNZ

Your logs look good! If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi Dr M
Before i do instructions for final steps I have realised I cannot access windows updates. There was no problem before my infection but now receive a 0x80072EFD error. I have followed all recommendations on microsoft help and accessed links through your website to Microsoft knowledge but to no avail. I ran SuperAntispyware and it picked up Trojan.Agent/Gen-PEC located in c\combofix\Pev.exe....was this quarantined here or an infected file?? I have been working on this for two days and its driving me crazy...any suggestions?
    Many thanks Jeanette

    ;)

    Jeanette -

Pev.exe is used by ComboFix and is often identified by scanners as problems, which it is not. Note the additions to the uninstall of ComboFix and its folders:

I'll get back to you on the below:

    Hello, Jeanette

Just to straighten out something in my last reply (which was from an older Final Cleanup Steps )...

    We clean up NirCmd.exe & PEV.exe automatically with MGclean.bat.

Now, let's see if we can get to the bottom of your problem with Windows Update.
    1. Verify that Automatic Updates is not turned off.
    2. Make sure time and date and TimeZone are correct
    3. See if Automatic Updates works in safe boot mode
    4. Reset HOSTS file
    5. Flush DNS server
    6. Add these Microsoft URLs to the Trusted Zones
    7. Shutdown your firewall and retry
    8. Shutdown your anti-virus program and try

Please give a description of how things are now working!
